How often is the fan of the Inspiron 6400 suppose to turn on?

Mine turns on every 5 minutes while I'm running Word and browsing the internet. Is this normal? If not, how can I go about controlling the fan/heat? Is there a preferred control option which balances out the fan usage, and heat?

    Thanks in advance

If the notebook heats up enough to make the FAN turn on then it will. Meddling with it is not a good idea, especially if you are planing to forcefully make the fan run slower or turn it off. But if you want, then you can use i8kfangui which let you control the FAN and monitor temperatures on DELL notebooks.

well i would recommend checking the temperature of your notebook at which the fans turn on using a simple program like nhc and posting the temperature here so that other with the same notebook can help you
yes you can control the speed of your fan using a program like speedfan or can be controlled from the bios but i would rather say the former is better
the fans do come on when the temeperature exceed base temperature which is usually preset

According to I8kfanGUI, my fan kicks in when it hits 55 C and turns off at 37 C.

it usually takes up to 4-5 minutes to reach 55 C. then the starts going again.

Is this a "normal" occurrence for this laptop? Is there another setting I should set it on?

I was just playing a game, and it peaked to 77 C-- is that okay, too?

I appreciate the suggestions! Thanks in advance

I have mine set to turn on at 39 and turn off at 36. My fan kicks on fairly often but it cools it down quick. Intel rates their mobile chips up to 100C I believe.

hi guys, I felt my inspiron 6400 overheating, it actually kinda burned the microsoft windows license label underneath the memory module cover. the zone that is all heated up is that between the hard drive and the place where you plg the power cable.

reading shaheenarshan's advice I installed NHC and saw a bit what it told. right now the area in question is a bit hot (I think I reemember it was hotter yesterday) and the temperatures that NHC give me are 48 degrees Celcius for the CPU and 46 degrees C for the hard drive.

maybe is just this model's characteristic, but I begun to be worried yesterday. it was untolerable to have on the lap after a while, and the area of the table underneath the notebook gets really warm too.

a couple of days ago i took her for a ride, I went to college and then to the movies and always carrying it around in its suitcase. I took care of it but... now I'm worried. Maybe it's not as "portable" as I thought.

If you have programs running or if the laptop heats up the fan will be running

well those temperatures seem to be within the limits
personall my hdd is around 52c and stabalizes there whereas my cpu keeps fluctuating but as i said earlier those temperatures seem completely normal
overheating can either be caused by a blocked vent or so
check your vents for clogged dust
and if you still think your fan turns on more than it should try updating or flashing your bios fro the dell support site but plee b careful while doing so and follow the instructions carefully
or else you could install a program like speedfan or i8fan to control your fan speed and how often your fan comes on
    cheers
    hope it helps
