I purchased a Dell Inspiron 6400 in 2007. I am only able to use the touchpad/mouse if the laptop is sitting direction on my lap. I've searched all over the Internet to see if anyone was having the same issue and have seen nothing.
I have a synaptics touchpad and have reinstalled the drivers. I don't know how to fix this issue but it's an annoying one. I can't have the laptop on my lap all the time!

how about if it's on your table/desk/whatever, but you're touching something metal on the back of the computer?

I tried this and it works! If I'm touching metal it doesn't matter where the laptop is. What is that?
