I recently reinstalled Windows on my new Inspiron 6400, but there is no sound driver meaning I have no sound. I have the standard sound card with no upgrades, and have tried downloading a driver from the Dell website but this has not worked.

Can anyone please help me here as I start University on Sunday and really need my laptop. Thanks.

You sure you are downloading the proper drivers? I would log in to Dell's site and check your system configuration. You can contact Dell and ask them for the reinstallation disks if you did not get them, and they will send you the XP disk along with all the necessary drivers for your machine.

I did that last week for my brother's 600m.

If you don't have the Sound Blaster upgrade then you just need to download and install the Sigmatel Audio driver off Dell's site.
