I can afford a Dell Inspiron 6400 dual core with this config:

    Intel® Core™ Duo Proc T2050 (1.60GHz/533MHz/2 X 1MB L2 Cache) [Included in Price]

BUT, I want 667mhz memory/bus speed without having to pay the extra $75 for a faster processor. If I drop in 667mhz memory, will it automatically run the system bus @ 667mhz (and thereby slightly raising cpu speed)? Any ideas?

If you drop in 667mhz memory, it will not automatically run the system bus 667mhz, it will un the system bus 533mhz.

No, as mentioned above the memory will synchronize wih the bus. Not the other way around.

why is the FSB so low in Dell Laptops? It sounds like a ripoff.

^ It's no different then any other notebooks. In the 1.6ghz CPU it only has a 533FSB. It's different than the other 1.66 ghz CPU that runs at 667mhz FSB.

What will you be using the notebook for? $75 isn't a bad price at all to go from a T2050 to a T2400, perhaps wait a bit until you can afford that upgrade. It's odd that Dell doesn't offer the T2300E processor.

the memory speed will have no noticeable affect on performance, your benchmarks will look slightly better, but real world apps, you wont be able to tell anything

My system has T2300E. I noticed Dell stopped offering this processor in early July. Weird! I wonder why?

I'll be using the notebook for everyday web browsing and typing, but I like gaming too, so might opt for the Geforce 7300 (Counterstrike, Battlefield 2, Hitman: BloodMoney, flight + car simulators too). On weekends, I record music at the professional quality, so I would like it to handle audio editing as well as some simple CAD stuff. The reason I don't want the 17inch laptop is because it's more than I want to spend and too heavy/bulky to my liking. For me, the 15.4in seems like the limit for transporting places.

help? or can someone spec me or refer me to a Dell sales rep that will give me the best deal on an Inspiron E1505 dual core with 667mhz memory? My budget for the computer itself is $750. I can swing $1,000 total, but I'd like that to include a 17-19inch lcd and that nice Targus Feren laptop backpack.

STOP! If your getting an E1505 and want to game dont get the 7300. The X1400 is better and it costs less. Dell is doing something shady, trying to get more money out of people by trying to trick them. The X1400 is definitly better than the 7300.
