Had to reinstall XP-MCE OS and drivers and programs... Most problems solved but this one: Using Firefox 2.0.0.2 and Gmail, the rich formatting icons in Compose Email are empty boxes, i.e. colored icons do not display. BUT, same machine using IE7 and Gmail DOES display the rich formatting icons!! Have I missed some crucial setting, a driver, or what? Thanks for any assistance you may be able to provide for solving this mystery.

Mystery Solved!! Here's the problem: NoScript blocks the rich formatting. Disabling or uninstalling NoScript restores the colorful formatting icons. :)
