My Inspiron 700m has worked perfectly for several years. Recently, I had some software issues and tried booting XP from the CD and going into the recovery console, but after a minute or two the Inspiron would either power down or reboot.

I installed a new hard drive, but the laptop would crash after starting the format. I began suspecting a fan problem, but it was working. I left the laptop off, then placed it vertically so heat would vent directly upwards.

The format worked, and with XP running, there are no issues at all. I tried booting onto the CD, and again the laptop powers down after a minute or two.

Why does the laptop run from the hard drive, but not the CD? Any theories as why this behavior is going on?

    Thanks
