    Hi everyone,

Had a hard drive crash on an Inspiron 700m (from like 2004 or 2005?) yesterday. Is it worth installing a new drive, or are the specs on this laptop so outdated I should consider a new laptop?

I'm leaning towards installing a new drive, but this is used by an employee so I need something right away - I need to buy at a b&m store like Circuit City or somewhere like that.

Do you know if there are any limitations as far as how big a hard drive I can get, or the type I should buy? I know I should call Dell tech support but that's a nightmare to me.

    Thanks for any help!!!

I suppose it uses 2.5" IDE drives, that should cost about 50€ (~$80) for a 160Gb drive.

If you need the notebook for anything other than basic tasks (office, internet, mail and probably some older games) you definitely should get a new one, but that would be about $1000)

Razor2 - Thank you so much! I'm leaning towards buying a new drive and seeing if I can restore the computer (I'm not very techie when it comes to hardware). Now I just have to dig up all of the Dell drivers.

Is there a limit to how big the drive can go to? I was looking at this one:
Western Digital WD2500BEVS Scorpio 250 GB 2.5-inch SATA Hard Drive

    Thanks again for your help!

The WD2500BEVS is a SATA drive, it won't work. You should get a WD2500BEVE.

There is no limit for it, however, I don't know if there is anything larger than 250Gb with IDE connector.

I would get a replacement hard drive and continue using the system. The 700m still has plenty of life left in it. My best friend has a 700m and it is still going strong.
