On an old Inspiron 8000 laptop, I have a CD-ROM drive that only fits in the floppy drive slot. Will the BIOS recognize a boot CD in this new location? I believe it's an 18000 motherboard.
Thanks.

Fits into the floppy drive slot as opposed to what? The battery slot? If that CD-ROM module is an authentic Dell C-Series module (like it fits nice and flush, all the pins line up, etc), you will be able to boot from it.

It says "Replacement Optical Drive for CPI"'... the pins match, it fits in easily and is flush. Thanks for the info. -

What happened to the old CD drive? It's weird as the new one should work in the same slot. Does the floppy drive still fit in the side slot?

The original setup as I got it was CD-ROM drive in the side. Floppy in front. The CD drive was ruined by my friend's son when it stopped working and he tried prying open the metal housing. I ordered a replacement CD RW but it was not for the original CD slot on the side, but for the front-left where the original floppy is/was. I took out the floppy and put in the new CD drive in its place. As I say, it fits perfectly and I am waiting for a boot CD to try it. I am unfamiliar with this boot process and am wondering if it will be obvious how to proceed.
