I recently purchased a used Inspiron 8000, and it has only 256mb of PC100 ram.

I attempted to add another 256mb of PC100 ram, and the system wont boot with it inserted, it also wont boot with the original 256mb ram inserted into that same slot (DIMM A)

Also the dimm slots look different, the DIMM A is black, and uses different hold-clamps than the white colored DIMM B slot.

    I also tried:
    PC100
    64mb stick
    128mb stick
    256mb stick

    PC133
    256mb stick

and none of them would boot when inserted

    whats wrong?

On another forum I was told to check the Dimm A slot for bad solder joints, does this sound like what I should investigate?

    IBM A21M, 14.1"
    Inspiron 3800, 12.1"

Are you sure that it is a Memory slot, white is usually the color of the miniPCI slot. It it truly is a memory slot, maybe you should return your ram and buy it (overpriced) from Dell, that way at least you are insured compatability.

After thinking about your post again, your laptop should have 2 Dimms on it, so you if you are sure that your ram is not faulty, you might want to call up dell. However, it might be your ram, I have had occasions where my PC's needed special ram to boot, even though it was PC100, the pc needed a special type of PC100. Your Laptop might not be able to boot if there is only RAM in the slot that is causing you trouble. Try booting with the new RAM only in the slot that worked already, and tell me your results.
