We have an Inspiron 8100 with a dead battery, it has been running fine for a few years of the mains supply but can not run from the battery.

Recently the battery light has started to flash red.

Does anyone know if this is something to be concerned about?

This only means the battery is completely nonfunctional, and the charging circuit has detected this. I don't think there is anything to worry about - I had the same. However, it could be a good idea to remove the old battery anyway as you're not using it.
