I installed 2 - 1GB RAM chips into my 8600 but it only recognized 1 GB of RAM memory.

Anyone know how to fix the problem?

Thanks in advance for all help.

Did you make sure both memory sticks are working? Both of your memory slots are working? Try switching their positions in DIMM A and DIMM B and seeing what happens. If that still fails, try using only DIMM A or only DIMM B and see if both configurations work. If both of those work, but the 2GB still fails, you've got a problem...

Thanks. I'll give these a try and see what happens.

I have also read in the manuals on Dell's site that you should install A before B. Whether that really matters or not, IDK. I just have always done it that way, and have never had any issues.

Of course, if they're stacked this is not an issue, but if they're side by side or one under the keyboard, like my Mom's 1405, then it could be.

Your inspiron 8600 should work fine with two DDR sodimms. Your system is designed to use a maximum of 2 x 1GB PC2700 or PC3200 memory
