My Inspirion 9100 arrived last week, and for the most part I've been very impressed. However, recently I closed the laptop and let it enter Standby Mode while a game was running. After returning from Standby Mode, the game (running in a resolution less than my windows resolution of 1680x1050) filled a smaller area of my display, with the remainder of the display being a thick black border around the image.

This problem has not gone away. When I adjust the screen resolution to less than 1680x1050, or when a game is run that uses a lesser resolution, the display doesn't scale down the resolution - it just uses a smaller area of the screen.

    Any solutions?

PS. As you may have guessed, I'm using an SXGA+ display.

Hmmm... and reinstalling DirectX and my display drivers didn't solve the problem.

I know a guy who this happens to. He has an 8200. When he changes his resolution, the display gets smaller with black space around it. I'll have to see if he ever got that fixed. Definitely a setting in display properties.

Thanks for that, I look forward to hearing what your friend did to fix it. I've tried toggling all of the display options, but nothing I could find seemed to resolve the problem. If I can't find a solution, I might just have to contact Dell Support.

Well, I found out his solution...he just doesn't leave native resolution. There's obviouslly something wrong though. Call India and let us know what happens.

This also happens to me with my three year-old Inspiron 8000 (1600x1200). Sometimes I have to change the resolution down when using a data projector. At the time it fills the screen, but if I go to standby then restart I have the small desktop with the black border as you describe. Sometimes it seems to be fixed by fiddling with the Display properties > settings > advanced settings but there is no logic to it as I can see and last time the only way I could fix it was to do a "system restore" (windows ME) to a time point before I changed the resolution.

Problem solved, and I didn't even need to call Dell. [ :D]

Stubbornly, I kept trying to figure it out myself, looking again through the display options - and that's when I found that something which appeared to be a heading was actually a button, containing the option 'Expand to full panel size'.

    For future reference:

Control Panel > Display > Settings > Advanced > Displays > 'Panel' > Tick Scale Image, Select 'Expand to full panel size'

Brian, preynolds, thanks for your help.

Thanks! I must have looked at that dialogue box 100 times and never had clicked on that heading.
