I've been using my trusty Inspiron for well over a year now and come across my first problem.

I have several Sandisk USB drives that are recognised and installed perfectly as drive E: when inserted to the USB socket.

I have a new Verbatim 1GB USB drive that had that dreaded U3 software installed - which is now removed, however, although the drive is detected it won't assign a drive letter

I've gone through Disk Management and assigned different drive letters - but other than telling me I need to reboot the pc in order for the drive to work - nothing is ever shown in My Computer or Windows Explorer.

I can see the drive (un-assigned drive letter) in Disk Management though?

How can I get this USB drive to work properly?

It is detected and works fine in at least two other PC's I have access to???

    Thanks in advance :)

Hmm, that's weird. Have you tried using a different USB Port? I can't figure out why it is not working. Dell normally uses XP drivers for USB support, so if your others are working I would assume this one would.

Hi Southern Girl, yeah it's a weird one for me too :(

I've tried all of the ports - to no avail..when I plug it in I get the customary ding of USB detection and have the icon in the task bar showing a storage device, just no way of actually using it :(

I've just plugged it into my work PC (Dell Optiplex GX620) and it shows up instantly as drive E:

I guess I need to try Verbatim tech support, not that I'm expecting much help from them.
I had a problem with the U3 software and they suggested the installer was corrupt and the drive faulty - even although it worked fine on one PC at the office...

Yeah that is weird. I have U3 on mine and have never had any problems. You might make sure that XP and your drivers are up to date.

Still having the same problem - U3 will not work for me at all and virtually all new USB drives are detected but will not install and assign a drive letter.

All of my current USB drives work perfectly....

I've noticed issues with U3 drives at the office - some PC's seem to work fine others just don't want to know - with the same USB drives...
