This is a great forum. I've gotten a lot of good advice over the past year, but now its time for me to stop lurking and actually ASK a question (or two).

I've read several reviews on the Dell Inspiron 9300, which I purchased about 18 months ago. Every review mentions great battery life and cool temperatures.

Fact is, my two biggest concerns are just that. I have NO battery life and the laptop is so darn hot that I can't put it on my lap.

    So

    1) What would cause a battery to die? My battery lasts 20 minutes, tops. I always have the battery in, and my laptop is ALWAYS plugged in. I very rarely ever used the battery alone. It's a 6-cell battery that came with the laptop.

    2) What causes a laptop to run hot? I mean, my laptop runs HOT. I need to put a pillow between the laptop and my lap, and it still gets hot after a little while. Stupid question but does a high amount of running processes make it run hotter? I've read the "Guide to a Cooler Laptop", but I don't trust myself with opening up the laptop to do all that stuff.

I've tried the fan coolers, they don't do a whole lot it seems. Just curious what makes a laptop run hot, if its anything I'm doing or if they just simply run hot because they do.

Thanks in advance for any help.
