My dell inspiron 9300 is powering off 12 secs after i boot it up. it makes a buzzing noise when the power cord is plugged in and i try to boot it up. The noise is near the plug. when plugged in the batt. light blinks on and off every 5 secs. what is wrong and is it an easy fix. how much does something like this cost.

Will the machine run on AC after taking out the battery? If so, does the buzzing continue?
-
the machine does not run on ac after the batt. is out and it does still have the buzzing sound
-
the buzzing stops after you take the ac out. but it still will not boot up off of the batt. it still shuts down after 12 secs.
-
the buzzing only happens when you try to boot it up with the ac in. there is no buzzing if you are not booting.

My guess is that you probably need a new charger, hacksaw, though I can't think of a way to test your machine unless you have access to a second charger. If your charger is bad (and making weird buzzing noises), you wouldn't be able to use AC, and your battery wouldn't receive a charge. Hope a wiser poster than I has a better answer for you.

I have the same problem with my sony laptop. It turns on and about 15 seconds into boot, it shuts off and restarts. Is this the problem your having?
-
yes, this is the exact problem i am having
-
I have tried a second charger that is a good one. It still buzzes when i attempt to boot it up. it is definetly something in the computer..not the charget

I think your mobo and/or gpu has overheated and is dying/died. Best to call dell if it's still underwarranty. Also, they have a screen replacement thing going on for the 9300 - search the forum

you might consider opening the laptop and see if the cpu/heatsink is seated right, clean dust from the heatsink. it may be overheating. It possibly is shorting. clean the fans out. I'd use the thin tip on the vacuum accessories, but hold the fan blades so they don't spin so fast. I use a womens powder brush to clean any dust accumalated on the parts and use the vaccum. check to see if any parts feel out and are shorting by touching. If you have another good HD, swap that out and check. is the ac connection wobbling, or is it a tight fit? I had the same problem but not would shut down after 5 seconds. I opened it up and took a look around. the charging board sits behind the GPU but part of the card sits under it. there's spcer, so that it won't short..lowe and behold it got free. I glued that in place and voila. Hope it turns out good for you.

If you search the Dell Support site, you can find a Service Manual there. At least I did over a year ago...saved it several HD's incase I ever need it. Makes getting inside pretty easy....

No, it's not the charger nor the battery, nothing related to power. Searching dell manual? What kind of advice is that? Any who, i have tried dusting the laptop from the inside, hitting it, and yelled at it. I found out that it may be the hard drive is too old, or the component in the computer is worn out, ie... cd/dvd rom drive. Try formatting the hard drive. If this does not work, try replacing it. This problem also plagued my HP desktops.

If another known good AC adapter does the same thing and running on battery also fails to start then it is the power supply/charger board portion of the motherboard that is the problem. If the buzzing only happens when the AC adapter is connected and you try to power on then we know it is not the drives making the noise.
Unfortunately the only way to fix this would be to replace the motherboard for the computer. If you are still under warranty then it will be a simple matter of contacting tech support (or myself) to have a service set up. If you are not in warranty then you have two options for fixing the computer: purchasing the motherboard from Dell Spare Parts sales (or another source), or paying for an out of warranty depot repair (the motherboard cost is separate from the depot service fee).
If you have any questions on what is involved for the different services just let me know and I will be more than happy to answer them for you. If you wanted to see the service manual for your notebook (or any other Dell computer) they can be found on the Dell support website.
