I'm looking at getting an Inspiron 9400, both for gaming and every other use. Mainly i was thinking of settling with this laptop becasue i can't afford an XPS M1710, but the Inspiron 9400 can be customised to share all the main features that i wanted in the XPS.

The only thing holding me back is that i have read some user reviews (the ones on cnet reviews), that say the 9400's DVD component is faulty. No proffesional reviews state any problems with DVD play back, but those few user reviews freaked me out. Especially becasue one user review said some of his DVD style PC games had issues with it too. :(

Can anyone help me out? It seems like an all round good laptop, but i don't want to spend AU$3,100 on a laptop that may not play certain games, DVD's or have trouble burning.

Any help will be much appriciated :)

The only negative thing I have heard about the e1705's DVD Drive is that it can be noisy, depending on which drive you get-NEC or Sony. I have had both drives. I had a Sony in my first machine and it really wasn't bad at all, and I have a NEC in my current replacement system, which is a little bit quieter. Both drives worked fine. I wouldn't worry about the DVD Drive. They are fine, whichever model you get. :)

I had one problem with my NEC, but that was i'm sure just quite a Rare fault where cd's worked but not any type of DVD format. I'n unlucky like that though. My PSP UMD Drive died on me aswell when i bought it. Anyway back to the point Dell replaced the drive in a couple of days. I think it was a one off. Fine now. Shouldn't have any problems. :)
