So i've searched a lot about this notebook and its heat issues with a 7900gs. I'm getting mixed reactions. I know some people use a cooling program to control their fans.

I'm in a position to buy this notebook for pretty cheap with a 7900gs, used for about 3 months. I dont want to get it if I gotta deal with heat issues.

I know its been discussed on hear before, its just all over the place, and i'm hoping for a definitive answer.

I have one and even while gaming heavily my comp tops out at about 75 which is far away from being dangerous. It probably wouldnt feel great in your lap, but who games like that? Otherwise my temp stays in the low 50s which is fine for lap.

And you probably will want to download the fan program if you want to game so you can monitor your temperatures, but I am sure it would be fine if you let it run without it.

the dell 9400 is the e1705 with a different name. It is a rock solid machine and the video card is a steal for the price. The video card is also based on nvidia's new 90nm process as are all of the desktop versions. It only consumes 19w of power! This greatly reduces the amount of heat that the gpu emits. Highest that mine ever gets is 73c. I also have the I8kfan prog running to keep the proc and gpu cool. I'd say get the laptop because there is nothing faster under $2k as far as I know. good luck!

From what I hear, the temp problems with the 7900GS are nothing compared to the 7800, so I say get it! I love mine. Just don't be gaming on your lap. The bottom of this thing is covered in vents. I use I8kFANGUI on slow while doing basic usage, and for games I set it to high. I don't want to mess with a profile. My GPU never goes above 67C, and my CPU never breaks 52C. All other temps stay under 44C. The fan noise isn't that bad on high either. When you turn up the sound to about 1/4 volume, it drowns the fan noise out.

Yup! I have the same rig here and it hovers around the mid-70sC for the better part of the game and cools down pretty quickly. I have the notebook elevated slightly, so that might help as well.
