got the new laptop about 10 days ago. everything is swell, except the dvd-drive, which i've since replaced couresy Dell. the original Sony for the Optiarc AD-5540A (NEC + Sony).

the first drive was LOUD and slow -- 7 minutes  to copy a 700mb disc to the HD!!

the second drive is somewhat quieter (sort of: overall, yes, but it spins a lot louder than the sony during video playback), but it still takes 6-7 minutes to copy 700mb of data to the HD.

both drives were on DMA too. is this, um, "normal" for a Dell notebook?
