    Hi,

I just bought a new inspiron E1405 2 weeks back (Win XP Media Center, Intel Core 2 Duo 1.8 Ghz, 1 GB RAM, 120 GB HDD 5200 rpm, Intel Pro integrated wireless, etc.). Turns out that my fan is almost running nonstop within the first 5-10 mins of turning on the computer. I have already installed i8kfan ( http://www.diefer.de/i8kfan/index.html) and the CPU temperature reads constantly around 40F--47F (while doing light weight stuff).

Now, I bought this laptop after seeing ravishing reviews about how good it is in terms of lesser heat dissipation. Unfortunately, it turned out to be opposite.

Any comments or suggestions to improve my situation? I haven't contacted any Dell customer services rep yet.

    Thanks.

Well, 47 C is pretty good for a laptop. I'd use the fan utility to lower the temperature thresholds for the fan(s) to turn on. Do this test at full load (to get the worst case), but you can easily get up to 60-70C safely so find your personal desired mix of temps/fan noise.

I suggest updating the BIOS Revision. This can be found at support.dell.com

This may solve the problem, as new BIOS Revisions include better thermal control, etc...

Thanks -- I might try that out. And apologies for messing up the metrics (its 40--47 degree C).

No problem...just wanted to make sure I was understanding that right. 47F would be a heck of a lot better but I'd have to wonder where you lived :).

I just checked the support website and last BIOS update was released on 12/11/06, whereas I got my notebook on 01/12/07. Do you think I still need to update? Won't it already have the latest BIOS?

You can also look into the cooling guide for more ideas. If you are using i8k to measure temps, I believe that it is offset by 8 degrees. Make sure you are not blocking the exhaust vents either.

I believe the offset by 8 degrees only applies to video cards.
My 6400/1505 constantly hovers from 35-50 depending on i8k settings.

My 640m CPU temperature rarely goes about 40. I'm currently at 32C.

Thanks. I actually tried that, but didn't see any change/improvement in lowering the temperature.

That sounds really cool/cold :). Did you do a fresh OS install after getting the machine?
