I tried burning and watching a DVD today, and to my surprise the DVD burned at 1x speed and playback was choppy and slow. I've never had this problem in the past, and this may seriously hamper my use of the notebook. I couldn't find a new driver for my drive, so I don't know if it's just an outdated driver or if it somehow got damaged and that's affecting it.

Any help or ideas would be appreciated.

Couple of things... what dvd drive do you have? what software were you using to burn the dvd?

    DVD drive:
    Philips DVD +-RW SDVD8820

and I used Nero 7 Premium and Alcohol 120% to burn the DVD image. I've used VLC player, WMP, and WinAmp to play commercial DVDs as well, and playback is choppy on all the players.

okay, philips does not have a driver that you can install. You have to pull the dvd drive and then put it back in. Once you do that, XP should detect it as new hardware and update it.

Have you tried playing the dvd in Cyberlink?

Well, I did a google search for my drive, and happened to find a post on Dell's forum that detailed the same problem. The device had somehow been set to PIO instead of UDMA 2. I uninstalled the device, rebooted, and it's working like a charm again. Thanks again for the speedy response.
