Well first I was wondering if anyone knows if Dell is planning on using the nVidia 8700m on anything else than the XPS line. I know it's a difficult question but someone might have some inside info on Dell so it's worth asking :p

I think I *might* get a Dell soon, but I'm just not convinced by the performance of the 8600 currently offered. Can anyone give me some info on that? For example, can the 8600 run games at the WSXGA+ resolution used in the 17' models? Games like HL2 and such... not monsters like Crysis.

If only the 8700m was offered in the inspiron line, it would make my decision a lot easier.

I don't really know about the future of Dell incorporating the 8700 in the Inspiron line, but I can tell you that the 8600GT will run HL2 maxed out pretty smoothly. You said it yourself, no monsters like Crysis, meaning games that the 8600GT will handle just fine.

I mean heck, my NVS 140m (which is the equivalent of the 8400GS) ran HL2 Lost Coast at 1280*800 high res full HDR at 35+ FPS. So if a low-medium end card that wasn't designed to run games did so well, a high end gaming specialized gpu will be even better.
