I know that the Vostro 1400 is made by Asus. The material and design (access all components from bottom panels) are way too similar to my older A2K.

Then as I went into Dell's component list, it says AsusTek on the module.

Is this a serious question? I can not actually tell if people are mocking Dell for releasing the same systems under different names.

Vostro 1400 and Insp 1420 are the same.

I actually think this is fairly important. As per Dell's own marketing strategy, some potential buyers, or rather those who already bought a Vostro, may be convinced that the two lines are different. The paint scheme is the only difference and the build quality/materials are identical. Speculation post-launch was that the Vostros were all magnesium alloy and the Inspirons were not. Built the same, and that's that.

Is there a link at the beginning of this thread explaining what is referred to in the title of the thread?

I am curious about the difference between the two lines and would like to read what that is - besides the color and the XP option.

The only difference is the color. I hate it when a company calls the same thing a different name. It just confuses their customers.

OP, your post does have merit so no need to feel bad.

Admittedly, the series of replies in this thread gave me quite the chuckle on a Fri night, and I'm not at all a regular here.

But, to be honest, I'd no idea till recently that Inspirons & Vostros were one and the same, as judging from TV spots, they seemed like different machines targeted at different markets, so in my naivety I'd assumed they were, yanno, different.

The only "real" differences in software and OS.

Can't configure Home Premium "easily" or "normally" on Vostro. (Basic/Bussiness/Ultimate)

Not as much crapware. Aaaaand I believe that's about it
