Hi all,
Just wondering... is it possible to run the inspiron e1405/640m WITHOUT the battery (ie. running only on AC power, with the battery not installed) ??
Thanks in advance!

it is possible to run any notebook on a/c w/out the battery.
however, it's not at all recommended and there is no advantage to doing so. -
I was under the impression that by removing the lithium-ion battery from a laptop when it is not in use, that its lifespan would somehow be extended... is there any truth to this?

some have argued that going pure a/c (w/o battery) allows you save batter life (wear and tear) by not constantly charging the battery when you are plugged in. This is most probably insignificant compared to the risk of getting an electrical short from exposed metal contacts - and the pain of having to always put the battery back in its place when on the go
-
I guess it would be rather inconvenient to constantly switch the battery... is the benefit to its lifespan measurable or significant... considering 2-3 years usage?

well my 9 cell battery can last for 500 charg-discharge cycles (according to dell manual). on average i use 1 clycle a day, which means that it will last 500 days, about 18moths

It's also probably wiser to have a battery in the laptop just in case there's a power outage whereby you will not loose work that you have been doing. Unless of course you a back up power like those belkin or adps

But with the recent battery explosions, do you guys still recomend leaving the batt on while on AC? What if you plan to use it for long hours? Would it not damage the batt or heat it up to destruction?

The E1405/640M was not a model called back from dell because of heat issues. This means that there is no harm of the battery in this model. I dont believe the this model has the Sony batteries so you dont have to worry about running on battery

yes it it. -

I dont know about the dummy book. You could possibly be doing more harm than good by taking the battery out and in many times. Why tamber with hardware when you dont need to? If you keep doing that something else in the computer might go wrong. I dont know about this but there is always a possibility. Dont be scared of carrying around the battery in the laptop...its not going to explode. Its like trying to take care of something TOOO MUCH (perfectly) that eventually something can possibly go terriably wrong.

yeah, i've seen bad things happen to laptops when you cut the power. it seems like an unnecesary extra measure, and a hassle to have to put the battery back in right before you unplug from AC everytime... Even if it's going into standby, it requires power. The choice is up to you though, if you want to do it, then go ahead. I just don't see any practical purpose or benefit from doing so.
