So, i'm going to order my girlfriend a laptop within a few days and i plan on getting her an inspiron 1501, my plan was to get 1gb's of ram and then just add another, but they're 2x512, so now my plan is to just buy a 2x1gb package from NCIX.com. My question is, what ram works in the e1501?

If you go here you'll see all the different variety's of ram they offer:
    http://www.ncix.com/products/index.php?minorcatid=105

So, what kind should i look at? and if you want to look, any suggestions?
I don't want to spend any more than 100 bucks otherwise i might as well just do the upgrade from dell.

    Thanks.

I'd get this. I'm pretty sure your motheboard will downclock it, but it's still a great deal.

Ah, so it is PC2-5300, thanks. A 1x2gb card is a good idea cause i can just throw another one in eventually if needed. thanks, that saves me over sixty bucks not having to buy dell ram. I'll have 2x512's extra, but oh-well.

I think this is what she's getting under the tree:
    Mobile AMD Sempron™ 3600+ (2.0GHz/512KB)
Genuine Windows Vista® Home Basic (Will put home premium on it)
15.4 inch Wide Screen XGA Display with TrueLife™
    1GB DDR2 SDRAM at 533MHz, 2 Dimm (1x2GB after upgrade)
    ATI RADEON® Xpress1150 with 256MB HyperMemory
    120GB 5400RPM SATA Hard Drive
    8X CD/DVD Burner (DVD+/-RW) with double-layer DVD+R
85 WHr 9-cell Lithium Ion Primary Battery

Not bad for IM and Web-Browsing.

Total after tax and shipping: $637.32 CDN. no coupons, no dell savings.

Why not get the Vostro 1000? It's cheaper, I believe.

The vostro is $50 more. plus my old laptop was the e1501 and she liked it. mainly the front media buttons. I ordered it last night. It's cheap, so i don't really care. this will stop her from constantly stealing my laptop from me.

Hopefully i can keep it a secret long enough to surprise her.

Also, if i get this 1x2gb stick for the laptop, should i remove both of the 512 sticks? I'd have 1 free dimm, would i get better performance leaving it empty, or with that extra 512?

    thanks.

You'd get better performance leaving in the extra 512 stick, as it would give you more memory (it should also give you some dual channel benefits). If she's going to be gaming on it then getting another 2GB stick should be a moderately high priority, as full dual channel really helps that IGP.

No, i think the most intense program she will use would be google earth of Office 03. She doesn't do much. I just figured for Vista's benefit i'd upgrade to 2GB's of ram.

Then yeah, the 2GB + 512mb setup will be absolutely fine.

Also, does it matter what SODIMM i put the 2GB card? there is one in the rear as well as one under the keyboard, will it matter what slots i put the 512 or the 2gb cards?

Oh, i have the 1520, i was thinking of buying two of those 2GB cards and putting my 2x1gb cards in the 1501 instead. is this possible? just want to know if they are compatible with each other?

    Thanks.

Yes, they're compatible with each other. And no, it doesn't matter which slot you put the RAM in.

I was reading about the 1501 and it says it has a max of 2GB's and 1GB per dimm. so will my 2GB module work? what's the facts on that?

If it won't, can i switch the 2x1gb out of my 1520?

Also, will the 1520 have better performance with 1x2GBs, or 2x1GB's?

The Inspiron 1501 have the front media buttons? I remember seeing a relative having this laptop but recalled it being blank in the front.

The e1501 (6400) does. the 1501 does not.

So the laptop i'm getting Does not have the media buttons. Does Not include Media Direct.

    Anybody know about the ram?
