I have a Dell Inspiron 1520 that's a little over a year old. I never tried the MediaDirect button until today...what a mistake. MediaDirect never fully initialized and the hard drive died. I get the message: "Internal hard disk not found. To resolve this issue, try to reseat the drive". I've removed and put the hd back in but it does not get recognized.

It seems like an incredible coincidence that the hard drive failed the same time that MediaDirect was executed. Has anyone had similar problems with MediaDirect messing with the hard drive (failure)? Any ideas as to how this happened?

I don't think there is anything I can do to salvage the drive. I tried recovering but the disk doesn't show up. I wish I would have tried MediaDirect while the system was still under warranty, since I'm sure the hard drive failure is linked to the start-up of this application. Any insight into this problem or why it occurred would be appreciated.

    thanks.

Basically what's going on is Media direct accesses a different partition on the HDD, when you boot to windows normally it is on a different partition, It is likely that the partition was already corrupt and when you tried to access it by going to media direct it killed the rest of the HDD. Basically it is a new hdd the 2000-0142 error indicates HDD failure as if that wasn't apparent and if you were still under warranty they would replace it no questions asked.

I'm assuming that the corrupted partition for MediaDirect could have happened at any time? It's frustrating that one corrupted partition on the HDD ends up damaging the entire HDD.

I never used MediaDirect before yesterday. Unfortunately it sounds like the corrupted partition would not have caused a problem if I never would have tried out MediaDirect. I should have tried this a month ago and scanned everything when I was still under warranty.

What's the best utility to use to check the health of HDD? Will the standard defrag pick up corrupted sectors?
