I want to replace my 8 yr old XPS desktop and ThinkPad notebook with a single 17" laptop. It's main use will be photo editing with PS CS3. The Dell Inspiron 25% off coupon seems like a great deal, can get a great LT for about $1800, but paying the extra for an XPS M1730 is also still an option. My main concern is the screen. I want a good screen for the photo editing. Would the screen on the M1730 be better than the high resolution screen on the 1720?

    Thanks
    Frank

Nope, it won't really make much of a difference. The XPS m1730 is mostly for extreme performance, like with games. I'd say the 1720 is enough for you. Just get the 1920x1080 resolution, and you're golden. You can always connect it to another monitor for more real estate.

    Thank You
That was actually my next question, with the money the coupon saves me I could get a 20 ~24" ultra sharp. Would this LCD work with the 1720?

The 1720 I customized has the T7700 processor, 3 gb memory, and 320 GB HD, should smoke CS3 compared to my current P3 with .5 gb of memory. :)

No, but he could still hook it up via VGA or S-Video. It should work with that monitor you mentioned -- most do. =]

Laptop screens are terrible for accurate color reproduction. Doesn't matter how expensive or special the laptop is - Laptop screens just don't do the job.

So when you're printing out those photos and colors are 100% dead on, you'll know what I'm talking about. Then again, no computer monitor is 100% out of the box. But with laptop screens it's nearly impossible to getting 100% accurate.

But to answer you're question, the 1720 will do the trick just fine. As a matter of fact I use PS all the time on my 1520 at work and home. Although for the important jobs, I use my good old Eizo screen to make sure colors are, perfect.
