From everything I have read about the Core 2 release, I don't believe Intel will be charging much more if any more than they have charged recently for the Core 1. That combined with reletively flat notebook sales, back to school and Christmas coming up should make for little difference in the price point of say a Dell Inspiron. I would appreciate any comments on this.
-
That is probably correct. Since Dell has removed the higher end procs for the e1405 and e1505, I expect that the Core 2s will enter with the same upgrade price as if you configured your Dell two weeks ago.
It might be initally higher in order to nab some of the people who are willing to spend a premium to get the first dells with Core 2 on it. -
Think I'm going to wait till around Christmas and try to also get a free upgrade to vista.
-
I'm not sure if vista will be out that early... I would think though within the next month core duo 2's will be an option for the whole inspiron and xps line.
-
-
Well if Core 2 Duo's are avalible soon, I may have to return mine and get one with that.
-
-
Excuse my ignorance, but how will that affect the price of the Core Solo? Or will Dell phased it out?
-
From what has been posted here it appears that the price of the core 2 duo will enter the market as the same price as the core duo. Who knows how the various sellers will react to this. They may offer a lower price in order to clear inventory. I would imagine that assuming the prices are the same from Intel, it will be up to the various vendors to determine price points.
To be honest know one knows 100%; this is all speculation. -
Core 2 Duo's (Conroe) have already appeard in their most expensive XPS desktop (although conroe was released before merom). Hopefully it will be rolling over to notebooks pretty soon (at least the XPS 1710).

Intel is not phasing out the Core Duo right away. It will be around for some time, especially the lower-end T2050 and T2250, since they have a nice price point and are great for budget machines. -
If Dell wanted to rack up a lot of money with Core 2 Duo, one tactic could be to keep it at the Core Duo price point but to simultaneously end the Inspiron coupons since we still don't know when that will occur.
-
I'm somewhat suprsied Dell decided to introduce the Core Duo 2 on the Inspiron range first. I would expect the XPS range to have the new CPU first as it is Dell's premium range of PCs.
It somewhat does not seem that way any more? Is the magix of the XPS going away?? -
If Dell's desktop pricing is any indication of what Merom will cost, then we might see some inflated prices when Merom is first integrated in notebooks. See the price difference between the Core and Core 2 desktops:
http://www.dell.com/content/products/results.aspx/dimen?c=us&cs=04&l=en&s=bsd
The difference between the Dimension 9150 and the 9200 is about $1k. Now the 9200 does have plenty more features than the 9150 aside from the processor, but not a thousand dollars worth. Lets hope that this increase in pricing has to do with the new mobo/ps/etc required for desktops to run Core 2... while Merom *should* just be a bios update. I hope so, because I'm holding out for Merom before buying an e1705. -
Does anybody know when Dell will be releasing the Core 2 Duo on the m1210? I called Dell and tried asking but their representatives were clueless.
-
So intel will keep the same prices for merom, but dell might elevate its own price for re-selling it?

Essentially, you're going to have to wait. And as posted, given how Dell has inflated the prices of their Conroe-based desktops already, expect that in the laptops too. Best off waiting 1-2 months after they're available in the notebooks to actually order one - let the price level out. -
-
I think merom will be avilable before many think. I think peopel will be able to order in a week to two weeks time. Delivery end of the month. I couldnt wait any longer so I ordred my Yonah today, but to others that wait, i think it wont be much longer.
one reason im thinking this is that even the XPS Outlet prices have dropped quite a bit, other makes are dropping Yonah prices, not drastically but its a sign to me. We should see Merom at slightly higher prices I think...and like someone else said, maybe less of the large coupons for a few months.
