I've searched the forums for answers on this but I could not find any concrete details on the actual differences between these two lines of notebooks--that is, if there is any. Are these notebooks different in any way other than the different colors? I've read that Inspirons only have magnesium alloy as part of the lid but reading from reading reviews from PCMag and the like, it seems that the whole chassis is composed of magnesium alloy like the Vostro. I know the Vostro comes with a Mylar-sealed keyboard and a StrikeZone hard drive but I am curious as to if the Inspirons come with these features as well. May someone comment on/confirm this? Are there any other differences besides the ones I've mentioned? I'm particularly interested in that of the Inspiron 1420 and the Vostro 1400. Thanks in advance!

If you really searched hard for answers in this form, then you’d find that they are identical except for color and warranty(support) options.

Well, the Vostros are supposedly for the business class and has more options. I believe you could choose Windows XP Professional in the Vostros as well as Vista Home Basic, Business, and Ultimate. Also, the Vostros have the option of not having bloatware installed, such as Dell Network Assistant, Automatic PC Tuneup, etc.

As far as I can tell, they are exactly the same.

The only significant excecption is that the Vostros have the black interior with the jet black lid while the Inspirons have the silver interior and color lid options.

Also the Vostros have the T5470 @ 800FSB as their base processor while the Inspirons have the T5250 or T5450 @ 667FSB as their base processor.

I read the review of the 1400 Vostro that was posted. From specs, and pictures etc it looks identical to my 1420, except the color scheme on the inside is black rather than silver. The material even obviously is the same from the look except the color.

I don't know about the material being the same, the interior of the Vostro feels different from the Inspiron I had. My media buttons are very sturdy compared to the 1520. The interior of the Vostro does look like it will hold wear and tear better. They look identical but the build feels stronger. Then again I only had the Inspiron for 2 days but that's what I think.

I doubt there is much of a difference. I heard both have rigid cases with little flex. Personally I just like the black interior of my 1500 better than the silver...less of an eye sore for me but some people like the shinyness.

Is it true that if you want to put alot of upgrades into a notebook, the vostro lineup would be cheaper to do it to then the inspiron?

Well, another difference I have found only by reading reviews is:

The battery on the Vostro is a bit loose and tends to move around.
While I haven't heard anyone mention this on the Inspiron line.

Vostro and Inspiron owners, is this true?

I haven't noticed anything unusual with the battery in my Inspiron 1520, but I do only have the 6-cell.

I have the 9 cell on a vostro 1500 and it has no play in it at all...but does stick out, yes.
