Is the XPS or the Inspiron better for computer gaming? My issue with the XPS is that I want a 15in monitor, but I can settle for 17 if the XPS is that much better for computer gaming. I've heard that the Inspiron is just better in general. Any insight? I made this system

Well I play games on my 1520 all the time, HL2, CS:S, doom3, Garry's Mod mong others, and it runs everything better then a wet dream. Cool, and perfect, so no complaints from me.

One tip though, if you honestly want a better gaming screen, consider the 1280 by 800 resolution screen, that way you can run games on native resolution without adding 6x the stress on it.

    Happy gaming.

I don't know much about the XPS, honestly, but if you want a 15 inch screen, go with the 1520. The Inspiron line really is great, and the 256 mb video card would be perfect for gaming. Heck, even a 128 mb card (like mine on my 1420) runs Elder Scrolls Oblivion just fine.
So my answer would be the Inspiron 1520.

Well if you're talking about the new XPS M1730, it has dual nVidia 8700M GT cards, so the gaming performance will be much better than any Inspiron. It's also a lot more expensive. And if you're spending this much, there may be other machines to look at, and I suggest posting in the "What Should I Buy?" forum.

Regarding AMD vs. Intel, with Dell you don't really have much choice; the dedicated graphics cards are only available on the Intel models, so if you're gaming you'll have to go with Intel.

remmber you're paying for a premium brand......medium gaming is good for the Inspiron...however if you want to play @ high resolutions and the pretty effects then the XPS is for you...I would look at other laptops that have similar configurations if you're not going to shell out the cash for an XPS.

Well, I dunno. The Inspirons get you a 256MB graphics card and lots of other parts for a price you can't get if you were to configure a similar XPS...

Actually what swarmer said is incorrect. AMD/ATI has dedicated graphics (only one option, compared to nVidia's two). I forgot what number it is (plus I'm not into AMD graphics, I know nVidia's much better). If you check out the tech specs on the dell website, it should tell you.

My point is about the XPS is if you're ever getting one you're paying for a premium brand :) hence the XPS brand name and it is a well known brand name in the gaming community....you're paying for looks....that's pretty much it. You can find better hardware in other brand name laptops or make similar configs with the other lineups in dell.

    Not when it comes to the 1710/1730 you can't (i.e. T7600G/X7900, 7950GTX/SLi 8700's, etc)

What do you mean by this? Won't the higher resolution be better for gaming?

Also should I be considering the Vostro for gaming at all?

I'm not sure what he means either. I would opt for the high resolution...

NOOOOO......I wouldn't even consider the Vostro for the type of gaming you're thinking about.

which Xps are we talking about ?????????? (m1330 or m1710 or m1730 ???

    a Vostro/Inspiron with 8600M gt have of course better 3dmark scores then a m1330 with a 8400. BUT no better then m1710 or m1730......

(have Vostro/Inspiron locked VBIOS ?...(can you OC your computers ?

i have a 9400 with a 130 w PSU + unlocked VBIOS,(@600/800)...and i get higher 3dmark scores then a m1710 with go7950gtx....(so if you are prepared to Overclock you get a really cruel gaming laptop)

otherwise XPS allways is better then inspiron.

ps. i paid 800 euro less for my 9400 then my friend m1710...and run the games in same resolution and AA/AF like his m1710.... :)

What I think he means is if you get a screen with 1680x1050 or 1900x1200, your average 8600GT won't be able to play at those native resolutions, so you're better off with a lower res screen and play at native...

Which is why, if you're serious about gaming you go with an XPS. High res screen, grunty gfx card.
