    Hi there,

I just got my 1420 yesterday and wanted to install Vista Ultimate 64 Bit.

So, I loaded the DVD and got through the initial Install fine. However, when the computer first rebooted, It bluescreened and just went into reboot loops.

Have anyone ever successfully installed Vista 64-bit (any version) on Inspiron 1420/1520/1720 ? Is it even officially supported?

    Thanks !

This really needs to be PINNED because I post this same exact thing (written by me) at least once a day here...

That problem is because the OS can't see the drive, but it does because you installed it...right? Typically, you assign RAID drivers and stuff so you can install on that drive because it doesn't see it...but this gets confusing, because it actually sees it. When it asks you where to install, you'll see an option to load drivers - you want to go to support.dell.com and download the Intel Matrix Storage Manager and load the drivers in there prior to installing. The problem is you need a special AHCI driver, and not the generic Microsoft one. Yes, this is really frustrating and I was the first person to post about this in the forums - I called Dell and they had no idea what I was talking about, I had to figure all of this out on my own...

If you don't know how to do this, or anything like that...and don't mind taking a *small* performance increase for ease just go into your BIOS and see the HDD operation mode from AHCI to ATA and then you can install Vista using ANY disk!

The direct download link for Intel Matrix Storage Driver is here:

    http://support.dell.com/support/dow...1&impid=-1&formatcnt=1&libid=41&fileid=205611

If you are using a x64 version, the direct download link is here:

    http://support.us.dell.com/support/...eid=R154201&formatcnt=1&libid=0&fileid=205616

Oh, and this applies to the 1420, 1520, 1720, m1330, and I assume the m1730 as well ;)

When installing Vista, you need to supply the Intel SATA drivers (64-bit version); there's an option to load drivers from a disc or USB drive. The 32-bit drivers are on the Dell Drivers disc, but I don't know about the 64-bit ones. Search around for them under the 1420 drivers on the Dell website.

Thanks for the suggestion. I will try that SATA driver tonight.

However, I am not sure whether this is the problem though. When I installed the Vista 64bit, the installer sees my drive. I was even able to repartition it to 2 volumes (50GB & 100GB)

It also went through the whole installation fine... but bluescreened when it was trying to boot up Vista.

So... I never got a confirmation from you guys. Were you able to load vista 64-bit on your inspiron?

I really don't have a very good idea what I'm doing when it comes to 32-bit vs. 64-bit. I was planning on upgrading my 1420 from the included Home Basic to Ultimate when it arrives. I have both the 32-bit and 64-bit Ultimate DVDs. Is there an easy, step by step guide on how to upgrade from Home Basic 32-bit to Ultimate 64-bit? Or is it not worth the risk in my case? Thanks.

Ok, I was able to Install Windows Vista 64-bit on my Inspiron 1420. Here is the quick guide on how to do this

STEP 1: Create a USB / Floppy Driver Media
    1. Go to: http://support.us.dell.com/support/d...&fileid=205616
    2. Download the driver
    3. Extract all files to USB / floppy

STEP 2: Boot using Windows Vista 64 bit DVD
    1. On the screen where you can create partition on your disk, click "Load Driver"
    2. Select the Intel SATA driver located on your USB / floppy.
    3. Continue Installing Vista...

    Thats it !

After completing installation, go to support.dell.com. Go to your product page and download all the necessary drivers.

.... now finding the right driver is another issue altogether... I am able to load most of my drivers, however am unable to find the following 64 version of the drivers

    1. Broadcom NIC Driver
    2. Nvidia Video Driver

On my Device manager, I am seeing (3) "Base System Device" missing its driver. I am not quite sure what these are yet...

Any ideas / input on where to get at least the Nvidia / Broadcom 64 bit driver?

    Hi Doubleblack.

I still have (3) Base system driver required for my system. I have the slightest suspicion that it is the Ricoh MMC 64 Driver.

U have it? (Believe me, I tried looking :))

Other than that, I think I am all set. Got all the system drivers loaded, also got the Dell Multimedia button to work.

I think after the Ricoh MMC driver, I am all set.

    Thanks

aarrggh... Cisco does not officially support 64 Bit IPSEC VPN Client :(

So I guess this is a major deal breaker for me .. :(

I'd hate to run VMware ONLY for the VPN client... but may have no choice here.

Are you asking if you can change the HDD operation mode to ATA from AHCI then install Windows then update the drivers from within Windows then restart and go change the HDD operation mode to AHCI from ATA?

No, you cannot change the HDD operation mode without reinstalling Windows...

Can I just make a slip streamed Microsoft Windows Vista Ultimate X64 from my DVD using "vlite" ? Or just add the driver to a cd/dvd?

I don't have my laptop yet but I want to have everything ready.

Its an absolute pain in the ass, theres no driver for the 8600GT with a 64 bit OS. Dell dosent have one, nvidia dosent have one, i had to fish around until i found one on laptops2go or something, even then that didnt work i had to move some files around to get it to install.

Apart from that finding other drivers wasent too difficult. I cant wait to see how my audigy 2 nx fares :( It worked on the 64 bit desktop... only bluescreened once!

Strange I think i seem to have all the drivers and I don't even have my laptop yet and I'm gonna slipstream them into the x64 DVD on the unattened install

I already made my Xp pro performance cd with NVIDIA 64bit ForceWare 163.67 Beta Driver for Windows vista by accident and it works, just tested it on my Qosmio. ill prolly change the driver but i can't seem to find a reason, Iit was playing CS stress test and DOD source great max setting.

I second. This should really be pinned or something as this is the Intel Storage driver is the solution to a lot of vista or XP installation issues.

 Wish I could help, but, you see, I've got the same problem with an Inspiron 1720 with Vista 64 bit--it boots, bluescreens, and reboots ad infinitum. I noticed, however, that when I configured the BIOS to conduct a through reboot instead of a quick reboot, shut the machine down manually, then rebooted, the cycling stopped and everything was copacetic. These long reboots chafe me a might though and I'd like to find a way to get correct this and move on with life. Unfortunately, I've spent literally days loading software and drivers and will not do a fresh reinstall to begin with another Intel storage driver. If you or anyone has a workaround for my situation, lemme know, please. Gimme a ringy-dingy at [email protected]. If not, I''ll just learn to live with this handicap. I ain't gonna reinstall though! Ain't! Ain't! Ain't!

Hi... I only registered to thank you from the bottom of my heart... this issue was driving me crazy until I read about the loading of the drivers in the "select drive to install" screen. Now I have Vista Ultimate in my Notebook!! :)

This was also happening (and was solved by these instructions) in a Vostro 1500

    Thank you again!

Apologize for asking a stupid question.

I am using Vostro 1200. Maybe i'm blind but i cannot find the option to see what is the current HDD operation mode.

From the boot menu i can see this :

    Vostro 1200
    Bios Revision A03

And when i pressed F2 to enter the boot menu, i can see this

    Dell Inc. Vosto 1200 - InsydeH20 Setup Utility - Rev. 3.0

The hard disk is listed at ST9160821AS

May someone let me know where to find / to see the current HDD operation mode ?

    Thanks,

    Hadi

    Hi,
I am trying to install Vista Ultimate on my new Inspiron 1721 Turion 64 X2 TL58 (AMD) Dell laptop. The problem is that Vista does not see the hard drives. I read all the posts in this thread and downloaded the 64-bit SATA drivers ( http://support.us.dell.com/support/...eid=R154201&formatcnt=1&libid=0&fileid=205616)
But if I load the drivers with the 'load driver' option and afterwards click 'refresh' the hard disk is still not visible. Also I don't want to switch the hard disk back to ATA. (at least not yet :) I probably need some specific drivers for the AMD motherboard? I searched on the Dell site, couldn't find anything. I asked Dell support, they told me to search on the Dell site.. mmm.
    Any help is much appreciated.

Hi When I go to Dell website to check for the drivers http://support.dell.com/support/down...&catid=&impid=
it does not give me an option to download drivers for vista 64. When I choose my model inspiron 1420 it only gives vista 32 drivers and not 64. Where can I find the drivers for vista 64 for Inspiron 1420? All those Doubleback mentioned here I have downloaded. I am going to install vista 64 soon. Before I do that I would like to download all the required drivers. Could you please tell me what all drivers would I require (other than those Doubleback mentioned here) and where can I find them?

Will my current 32 bit drivers work for some of these?
Also If I install x64 will all those softwares that now work on my X86 Vista continue to work on X64 vista? Kindly help.

    My machine:
    Inspiron 1420. T7500,
    3GB RAM.
    128MB Nvidea Gforce 8400M GS

hi, i had to reformat my inspiron 1420 when i realised i had a spyware. since then everytime i restart or just switch on my laptop, i get the error screen, saying i should insert my installation disk, restart then choose a language and choose "repair". however when i insert it, windows loads, only to flash a blue screen then goes back to the original error screen.

is this cos i did not install the Intel Matrix Storage Manager Driver while reformatting my laptop? i tried installing it AFTER reformatting but the problem still remains.

does this mean i have to reformat it again so that everything works smoothly?

pls pls help, i'm completely hopeless with computers.

BJ Lap, the reason for your problem is, that the "Intel Matrix Storage Manager" is in fact INTEL driver, not AMD. i have the same problem over here and no luck finding de right AMD x64 SATA driver so far.. i see you post you'r problem a while ago, so if you heve found the solution, please let me know!

I have found the ATI AHCI Raid controller x64 driver for vista x64 instalation, finaly..
I actualy found it on Asus website avaliable for download only via FTP. So i installed vista x64 on my inspiron 1721 AMD turion dual core, and i only kept it for a couple of days, beeing dissapointed about the fact that out of 50 or so programs that i use, only 3 were x64 native. So it is realy no advantage for vista x64 with x32 software (in my opinion, x32 software used a bit more ram and CPU on vista x64 than they use on vista x32) Another thing that worried me was the fact that during the boot, there was a strong flash on the monitor like a camera blitz, so i guess that dell drivers do not support vista x64 very well.
