Since I already own the Vista discs and don't want to waste any more money, does anyone know if Dell will allow you to purchase a system without an operating system on it at all? I just want the computer, straightup

Somehow I doubt it; the option certainly isn't anywhere on the site. Your best bet would probably be to call them and see if you can work anything out, because they're said to be very flexible over the phone.

Technically, no, but you can purchase some models with a free OS... either FreeDOS or Ubuntu.

If you're going to install Vista from your own discs, they have to be the retail version of Vista, not something that came with another machine. -
Right now the only Santa-Rosa notebook you can buy with Linux is 1420. Price difference between a 1420 with Vista home basic and Ubuntu 7.04 is $25 (for an identical spec)
But Linux preloaded notebooks lack some of the options provided under Vista, like the go 8400GS graphics card and integrated camera. -
If you pick the same wireless card on both systems, then the difference is $50.
You do give up some options with the Ubuntu package though (including the cheaper wireless card, unfortunately).
Inspiron without Vista?
