I have a Dell Inspiron E1705, three weeks old. It's my first laptop. I cannot find the hibernate feature. Sleep is on the Start menu, but not hibernate.

Hold shift down when you're at the menu where you select "Stand By" "Restart" or "Shut Down." "Stand By" will switch to "Hibernate." (If Hibernate is enabled)

At first you should enable hibernate in Control Panel/Power otions/Tab Hibernate - check "Enable hibernate". After that you can shut down your laptop to hibernate as described above.
One more, if you have 2 gigs of RAM check if microsoft patch KB909095 has been installed. If not - install.
    Regards.
