I'm bringing it back and forth to law school. I'm torn between the i6000 or the 700m but the 700m has the old touch pad so i was wondering if it was going to get updated anytime soon?

The 6000 is much bigger than the 700m. So the two models are not strictly comparable. But they (and the 17" 9200/9300) are cousins, a change in design-look compared to the old 8600 line. In a way the 6000 is a 15" 700m. So it is comparably heavier. It is does not have the shiny screen on the 700m. It has the option of a far superior dedicated video card, and a normal-sized keyboard with good travel, neither which the 700m has. There are considerable trade-offs in having the much more portable 700m. But speed of running most business applications, especially "office" software and web browsing, is not one of them. As for whether it is going to be replaced soon: it is older and uses an older version of the chip (Sonoma) used in the 6000 - and the now superseded AGP video system. It is bound to be replaced by a newer model (710m?) with the Sonoma chip and PCI video system. When that will be, no-one knows outside of Dell. It might be soon, it might not. If you want a comparable notebook now in size to the 700m using the new technology you can look at the Latitude D410, though it does not have a wide screen.

If you are looking for a thin and light, I would take a look at the Fujitsu s6231. It is lighter than the Dell, has much better build quality and has a better screen although Dell is good too.

IBM T42 wouldn't be a bad choice either. It is a little heavier, but sturdier than the Fujitsu. No glossy screen though. Very good keyboard for taking all those note in class:
