    Hi all,

Just wanted to know exactly what the procedure is for installing a Dothan 2GHz into an i8600 with a PM 1.7 chip. From what I've heard, the chip is compatible with the old motherboards, except that the BIOS has to be updated.

So my question is how do you update the BIOS? Presumably it needs to be flashed and reprogrammed, but I have no idea how to do this. Where do you download the new BIOS from?

And is the Dothan pin for pin the same as the PM 1.7?

    Many thanks!

The new Dothan chips will work in the 8600..

You can update the BIOS from www.Dell.Com : Go to their customer support section and find downloads. When you download the program and run it, it will automatically flash your BIOS

If you ever want to upgrade the chip yourself, Dell has instructions on their website on how to do this...there is a section for documentations, etc.

    Hi Jack,

The release notes for the newest 8600 BIOS say that it has added support for the new Pentium M chips...so hopefully they tested it out before they posted it!

Are you sure it is only a bios upgrade that is needed?
Even though they are pin compatible, the Dothan runs at a lower CPU voltage. I would make sure that the bios update can and does lower the voltage before risking a new Dothan in it.

Make sure the Dothan is a 400MHz version; it should be a 5 minute procedure.
