Installing Fedora 7 on Dell 1520

Has anyone been successful. I tried to put the installation fc7 64bit CD and it is asking me for the DVD-ROM driver. I tried many of the options that I can choose from, but i am still unsuccessful. Any ideas?

 

You have to put the iso of the dvd on a fat32-partitition and then you can choose for hard disk as source of your installation files

I own a shiny new Dell Inspiron 1520 (good laptop, solid !) and I'm trying to install Fedora on it (using as little non-Fedora software as possible). Most of the following information applies to Red Hat Enterprise Linux or CentOS, as well.

For those interested, I'll list my review, in order to share information with community:

First of all, please use the Fedora 8 test 3 x86_64 DVD, not Fedora 7. With F8, installation works out of the box, in full graphical mode.

Touchpad ("integrated mouse") works by default. DVD writer works OK.

After applying all software updates (via yum), as of October 11, 2007, you will notice that the Bluetooth adapter works out of the box, too.

Anyone on this list can please point me to some information for setting up:

- integrated wireless adapter;
- integrated webcam;
- modem;
- FireWire port (I didn't tested it, have no FireWire device);
- card reader (I didn't tested it, have no card);

I'll add other information as soon I'll get it.

Hi i tried to install Redhat Linux (RHEL) on my dell Inspiron 1520 notebook. It has a 250GB SATA hard drive but when enter into the GUI mode of RHEL and proceed to partition either automatically or with Disk Druid, i get an error message which says that RHEL did not detect any drives to create partitions on. I tried to create a RAW partition and one with FAT32 but that did not work. I really want a multiple operating system on my notebook i.e Windows XP Pro and RHEL. Please could someone help me with installation of RHEL only on my Dell notebook which is not installing due to the above mentioned problem. Dell customer care said that they have never tested installing Linux on their systems and it might not work which i doubt. Thanks.
