I've got two questions about installing my own ram into the E1705:
Will this ram work with it?
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?item=N82E16820208037
And if I install this, will it void my 4 Year warrantee with completecare accident insurance?
Just wondering, thanks a lot.

yes it should work, and no it won't void your warranty. The new RAM sticks won't be covered in your warranty though, so if they fail or dell determines they caused problems with the rest of your laptop, you'll have to pay for the repair.

Thanks for the response, turns out that I will just be buying Dell's memory anyhow (actually almost normal price after sales/discounts I'm getting). Would rather have it all covered under the 4 year warantee im paying for.

i heard we have to use same ram stick to have the dual channel right? and how do we know if we are running dual channel or not? anywhere to check?
-
To find out if you're running Dual Channel, just download CPU-Z and look under the memory tab. link -
in order to utilize the dual channel feature for the best performance, the sticks have to have the same specs - same size, same speed etc. I've seen suggestions to be the same brand, but that is generally to make it easier on the user.
You can do like what j4y and I are doing, but you might not utilize the dual feature. -
thanks for the answer.
does dual channel mean ram runs at double speed (i.e. 533mhz will run at 533 x 2 mhz)?
also, does the performance increase/decrease signifficantly with/without dual channel? -
bump....anyone knows about my question? im thinking to buy another 1gb stck to make it dual channel...

I actually just installed the RAM you linked to above in my E1705 that arrived today!!! I'm re-installing it as we speak. It took 3 minutes to pop the old stuff out and new stuff in (only becuase I was showing a friend how to do it, or it could have been 2 minutes). I've used Transcend RAM before in my 9300 and it worked like a charm. If you ever do have to send in your laptop for work, just hold on to the original RAM, pop it back in, and send it back to them with that. That would be a way to troubleshoot memory problems as well if you have some extra stuff that for sure will work. I upgraded to 2GB of 667MHz RAM for half of what Dell wanted.
I have nearly the exact same config as the OP, just a 100 GB HD instead and no Bluetooth. Other than that...exactly the same. This baby is gonna rock. -

it doesn't double the speed, and the performance is only marginal. You probably won't even notice it.

alright thanks for the answers... so i can live with my 1.25 gb at the moment...
-
yep. I've been living with mine for over a year. Unless you absolutely need 2gb, then just stay with what you've got.
Usually only gamers and users that do video editing or use programs that require alot of ram, need the 2gb. Everyone else can usually get by with 1gb. I have 1.2 because I didn't know what to do with my 256mb stick. -
