I'm trying to help a friend install Ram on their Inspiron. Is there a spot on the bottom that it fits in, or does the keyboard need to be replaced. I know Dell's are a bit cranky with changing stuff in them sometimes. Is there a specific brand recommended?
Thank you in advanced.

There is a slot underneath the system. You dont have to remove the keyboard.
Kingston, Crucial, and Corsiar are my favorite brands for ram. Something like this i believe is what you need:

Just pick the size that you want. -

Don't forget to unplug your laptop and remove the battery before you operate on your laptop. Also, would be good to ground yourself by touching any metallic object before you do the installation. -
Thanks so much guys, thats exactly the info I was looking for

Its very easy to upgrade the ram. Just follow the guide that kingjimmi posted, and it will walk you through the steps.
Just in case you aren't sure, the 6000 does take 200 pin DDR2. If you want to get memory from newegg, you can get any on the following link:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...ce=&MaxPrice=&SubCategory=381&Submit=Property
I've bought the Transcend 1gb-1 stick (price $67) from newegg, and haven't had any problems with it. Several users buy their RAM from newegg, and I haven't seen very many complaints on here. -
I'm finalizing my config for my i9300 and looks like it would be best to only get the min. memory from Dell and buy 3rd party from Newegg- Thanks SouthernGirl?
But can I put 1gb stick in one slot and leave the a Dell 256mb chip? or does each slot need to be same? -

Gilby, you can do that...but you won't be running with the DDR2 on both sticks...it will just run DDR2 at 256MB on each stick. But yes it is possible to do that.
-
i think what poster is trying to say is that if you have a 400mhz 256 chip and install another chip that runs at 533 mhz, the faster chip will downclock to 400.
please clarify if not. -
Thanks! -

I would recommend it...but if you want to save some cash and get 1 stick for now, that is good too, you shouldn't see that much of a difference considering you are putting in more RAM. The RAM that you are going to need is DDR2 PC4200 So-DIMM 200-Pin.
-
Like USAF said, it is possible to do that, and you won't notice a difference. That's what I'm doing, and haven't had any problems yet.
If you want to upgrade in the future to 2gb, it would be better to get 1 stick of 1gb versus 2*512. If you get the 512's, then you'll have to buy 2 sticks in the future anyways. -
Do I need 2gb on my laptop? I was told 1gb would be plenty- I guess more is always better?! I'm not much of a gamer, will be using the laptop for email, sufing, word, excel, camera photos, DVD play/burning. Having more memory, 2gb have any drawbacks? or just faster!
-
You probably would only need 1gb considering your uses, so I would just go with 2 sticks of 512. You can still buy it from newegg at a lower price.
It's not really faster. I guess if you upgraded to 533 sticks, then it would be faster, but I doubt you would notice. Usually 2gb is for gamers that need the extra memory. I'm not much of a gamer, and I do basically the same stuff that you do, and I only use about 40% of my RAM during normal use. I've never gotten past 60%, so I doubt you would really need to upgrade to 2gb. -

If you are doing just that....I don't think you would need 2GB, but if you plan on gaming it would be nice. But for now I would just go with the 1GB with the 256MB stick and then see what you think.
-
Thanks SouthernGirl- that will save some $$, so I can probably get 2- 3rd paryt 512mb sticks cheaper than the $100 from Dell installed?

Yes you can...here is the link to the brand that SG recommended earlier, but the 512 stick:

Installing it yourself is easy as pie. -

Not necessarily...but even if it was you wouldn't see much of a difference because you will not be utilizing all of the RAM, like the gamers do.
-
Thanks for the input and sorry for the ignorance with the memory!
I also see that the 1GB Transcend stick is $71.50 with $10 rebate!! -

Yes it is. Great deal for a 1GB stick...that is why alot of people bought it. I haven't heard of many problems. Let us know what you decide.

My friend is having a lot of trouble finding DDR2 533mhz Ram in Australia, Can anyone suggest a retailer (if they know) and can the DDR2 be swapped out for DDR if need be, I can believe the chage would make any difference.
Just want to make that is the Ram that this notebook takes, and where to get it... -

It takes 200-pin So-DIMM PC-4200 (533Mhz) DDR2 RAM. I don't know of any retailers that will ship it to you in Australia. Good luck, I hope this helps.

Hi Guys... I have Inspiron 6000 and 512mb ram on it. Now I use AZUREUS at times and whenever I use that my laptop gets too slow... Plus whenever I open Office it takes time, overall my laptop speed has decreased a bit latel, so I decided to upgrade the RAM...
Now I found this one : 1 GIG DDR2 Laptop RAM (2X512) PC2-4200 200-pin SODIMM. Now if I understand it correctly then there are 2 pins of 512 mb each rite ? if that is Yes then I would want only one pin of 512 mb ram, I guess that should work out fine. I dont really play games on my machine ... so I dont need 1.5 GB Ram on my machine.
I need your suggestion on this guys... Looking forward to it then
Thanks
