Ok, i think a lightbulb just went off on my head...

see what i did was replace the original HDD with a 80GB 7200rpm sata drive i had laying around... and tried a fresh install

but one thing i did not follow from the instruction is the use of the Media Direct CD...

i just booted into the Vista CD...

booting into the Media Direct will enable the vista install to recognize the components?

The Media Direct CD won't have the drivers on it, it is mostly just a stripped down verison of XP for the media components. The only thing I could think is to ask for a 64 bit DVD from the Dell forums by PMing Chris M I believe. Since the Studios are customizable with 64 bit, they should send you a DVD no problem. And if that doesn't work then you would have a case to have them replace the optical drive.

I had not thought of trying that. That should work though.

I have the exact same DVD/CD-RW as you have and I just finnished installing Vista Ultimate 64. I had to run the Media Direct DVD first. For some reason the Driver was on that disk. I booted to Media Direct and the DVD automatically loaded...........................

i'm installing vista ultimate 64 bit on a new HDD, not the one shipped by Dell.
i've been successful in installing from USB, installed ACHI drivers and so far, i did not use the Media Direct disk.

the issues i'm having right now...

    1) Broadcom 64bit driver seems missing...
    2) ATI catalyst 8.8 is not loading...
    3) my fingerprint reader driver is installed but i dont see how to get that started.
    4) webcam is not there...

and i still have 2 items that is still unknown... labeled as "Data Interface"...

    what am i doing wrong?...

by the way, my MediaDirect is not bootable and so i did not run that... could that be the cause?

    this is frustrating...

You are not doing anything wrong. The two devices are your trackpad and I believe the other is either the ethernet or webcam.

You simply need to install the correct drivers for each device. This does NOT need to be done during install and can be done at a later date without issue.

I just got a Studio 17 about a week ago and did the same thing. I did an erase and install of Vista Ultimate x64 SP1. Once the install was done I popped in the driver cd that came with my machine and installed as many drivers as it would let me. When I got done there were only three things I was missing.
    1. Media card reader
    2. Ethernet
    3. uknown device

I eventually found the card reader driver on a forum somewhere and even found a driver for my scrolling trackpad. I now only have two devices without drivers. My ethernet and the unknown device.

Things I no that are working are:
    1. ATI Video driver 'Running full native 1920x1200 with Aero'
    2. Broadcom wireless 'Thats how I'm typing this online'
    3. Trackpad Driver 'with scroll zones'
    4. Integrated webcam
    5. Media keys 'volume, eject, mute, etc...

If you get the ethernet going please let me no how you accomplished this lol. Thanks and good luck!

thanks... i've gone back to Vista 32...

i will have to travel and i just dont have the time and energy to put in so many hours on this every night...

    one question though...

i know going to Vista 64 bit will have it's advantages... but will I see advantages if i'm just doing...

    Outlook
    Firefox
    Corel Draw 12
    Photoshop
    Illustrator
    Excel
    World of Warcraft
    Total War

i know these are bit dated... and not sure if they are compatible for 64 bit... i've no intention of buying new programs...

i think i'll just stick to 32 for now... unless someone can convince me that going to 64 bit will be good for me... note... good for ME... as in what i'll be doing with this... ha ha ha

    thanks!
