I need some help on installing windows xp on my Studio 15. I now that the Studio 15 has similiar configuration specs as the XPS M1530 so I thought that the driver pack by Udi would work well but Dell has changed some thing between the XPS and the studios such as the Dell Wireless Bluetooth 370 on the Studio instead of the 355 bluetooth as on the xps also the 256MB ATI® Mobility Radeon HD 3450 instead of the Nvidia 8600 gt card on the xps and the new Dell Wireless 1510 802.11n Half Mini-Card on the studio rather than the Dell Wireless 1505 802.11n Half Mini-Card on the xps and if there are any other changes can someone direct me on how to make a driver pack for it that works with windows xp. Thanks. I really need Windows XP for the apps that I use and altogether Windows XP in my opinion is much better for the system and faster.
-
I know you insist that XP is "much better for the system and faster" but have you considered running XP in a virtual machine using software like Virtual PC or VMWare? This would certainly be easier than having to hunt for drivers from different notebooks on Dell's site.
-
I know i can use virtualization software to run windows xp on windows vista but i would still like to reformat and do a clean install of xp.
-
Come on guys please post some solution I really need some help on installing XP on my Studio 15. Thanks
-
Please help in this xp install issue. please. thanks.
-
I don't have my Studio 15 yet, however I am going to guess that since its so new, people have not had the chance to get it working, or really look for solutions yet
usually it takes a little time.
-
Thanks for the reply robstuart but do you think that in the near future (3-4 months) even though Dell will only have the Bluetooth 370 and Dell Wireless N half Mini card drivers for windows vista that there will still be hope for a really good driver pack coming out with modded drivers to work with windows xp? I am just anxious to know that if this is possible then I can hang on to Vista for a couple of months then switch over to XP. If you or anyone else can clear this for me then I am ready to buy this machine now!
So any answers?
Anxiously waiting for a reply -
Stop that, the board doesn't move that fast that you need to pump every hour or so, and besides it's against forum rules.
Chances are it'll be difficult - but what software do you have that won't run on Vista?
Don't believe the scare stories - since the release of SP1 Vista is on par with XP. -
Vista is an unacceptable OS in my view and I will certainly do everything that I can to install Windows XP cleanly when I buy the Studio 15.
-
Thanks for the reply donwilson, glad to see that someone is on my side and against Vista but I am just itching to figure out how to get the Vista Drivers to work on Windows XP.
-
You still haven't said what's wrong with Vista today. I know people who trashed it pre-SP1, and I don't blame 'em - it was rubbish. It is a different story now. I assume you never used XP at launch? I did - it was equally bad, but SP2 made it godlike in OS terms.
I'm just saying, what exactly do you need that won't work? Chances are, it either will work now after updates or there is an equally good alternative. I'm trying to keep your hopes low - getting it up and running on the M1530 was a big deal - the Studio 15 is newer, therefore chances are that finding drivers that will work with XP is going to be even harder. -
I have run Vista since release, and have yet to find something that won't run under it. Of course I do like to run the latest versions of software, but I also regularly play the original Command & Conquer.
Vista was buggy on release, they've fixed it, and I now don't think its any more buggy than XP.
In my experience, if you keep hitting the forums every hour asking for help, everyone will end up ignoring you. It is a new laptop, it will take time. Or take the risk and nut it out yourself then tell everyone else how to do it. When I can't get help that's what I do. -
As everybody said: vista is now a correct OS. It's maybe not "your dream OS", but it's solid enough.
Of course, if you really want stability, go debian stable, but don't whine that you can't find a driver for xxx hardware since studio 15 is brand new. -
I understand what you are saying and I will definitely try Vista on it first as i have not tried Vista yet but what I am trying to achieve is maybe that someone may have more knowledge than me to mod the Vista drivers for Windows XP. I am here to gain the knowledge and if I find out something to contribute on achieving this goal I will definitely do so. I will once I get the notebook try Vista and see if it works out for me though. Thanks for your replies guys (I took it as constructive criticism
)
-
^ Phew - that's what it was. Unfortunately some users drive away help by being too touchy
.
I have no doubt that it won't be attempted in some form, but I don't think at this stage, July 08, most end users will have problems with Vista, especially with 2gig or more RAM. -
Oh and why do you think Vista is an unacceptable OS if you haven't tried it yourself? -
Thanks guys. So just to make sure before i finalize on buying the notebook, are you positive that someone or a group of people will definitely try to somehow either by modding or finding some other driver which works, will try to make the Studio's components work in Windows XP with compatible drivers. And finally do you think a guy like me coming from XP will be able to non-frustratingly be able to adjust with Vista and make it work to similiar speeds of Windows XP and be able to do all of the stuff I can do on XP? By the I am probably not going to attempt an installation of any form of Linux on the machine because it just gets to be a headache for me to learn about all the nooks and crannys of a new OS when it took about a year for me to fully and I mean fully (inside and out-side-to-side) learn Windows XP.
-
no one can be 100% positive that people will get XP working on a Studio 15, but maybe you can use Vostro drivers to do it? Thats how a friend of mine previously got XP running on his Inspiron 1720.
Seriously, there is a period of adjustment with Vista. Its a new OS, always will be a period of adjustment. Deal with it, its worth it. -
Thanks for your help guys.
-
I would also like to load XP on Studio 15 for development purposes. Seems a bit challenging at the moment. I would run Virtual PC, with XP (quite ok) but seems Virtual PC is not supported on Vista Home Premium. So.. do I really need to upgrade to Vista Ultimate to load VPC to load XP Pro.... in order to meet my objective.
Best solution would be for Dell to provide drivers and let the market decide. I am sure they exist.
Anyway... I am getting the Studio 15 delivered later today... and if I cannot solve this.... I have a brand new Studio 15 on the market.
Any help or advice is appreciated. -
An update from a Dell guy...not a super strong answer but it may be correct.

I haven't worked with the new Studio systems at all yet, so I don't really know much about them, but the list of drivers for one, and the order they should be installed, is:
Dell Notebook System Software
Intel® Mobile Chipset Driver
Mobile Intel® GMA X3100 Video Controller
Ricoh® Media Card Reader Driver
Intel Flash Cache Logic Chip (Intel Turbo Memory)
Broadcom® 440X 10/100 Integrated Network Controller
Wireless driver (if applicable)
IDT® STAC 9205 Audio Driver
Dell Touch Pad Driver
Bluetooth® driver and stack
As long as you get the XP versions of each of these for the system you should be able to get full functionality out of it. Remember, however, that while the hardware warranty doesn't change because you installed XP (or any other OS) the support for the OS is going to be for the OS it shipped with.
----------------------------------------------------
If anyone gets this to work.. please post. -
can anybody please link to download locations of these components?
-
I am intrigued as I will be attempting an install of XP on one of these babies. I do multitrack audio recording and editing on my lappie--and Vista is just not where XP is. I can make it work, but audio settings keep resetting themselves and I can't run as many simultaneous tracks and effects with Vista as I can with XP.

See link above.....
Progress is being made on this... but the first few who break the code are on the bleeding edge... Looks like someone will resolve a best practice soon ! Keep optimistic.
Does not look simple yet... -
I just switched from xp to vista as I bought the 15...and it's not bad. the first 2 or 3 days suck with all the system messages but after you click "make this a permanent rule" or whatever it is, the same messages don't come up anymore...I've had vista for a week now and 3gb of ram makes everything run smoothly for what i need to do...
basically, i think that if you REALLY want xp, you will be able to bear with vista until you can safely install xp pro with the correct drivers and everything... -
Hi there!
I got Windows XP working on the Studio 15 at 98%. The only component i haven't found a driver for is the soundcard (IDT 92HD73C1). All other components are working just fine. It was really hard to find all drivers to get it working. So if anyone has got a solution for the soundproblem please tell me or send me the link to the driver. Till now i tried several drivers from other producers but there is still no sound (very often i got the message: This device cannot start. (Code 10)). The Microsoft Universal Audio Architecture driver is already installed.
I could make a package with all drivers for Windows XP and wirte a short tutorial.
P.S.: My English is a bit rusty =) -
I have XP installed too, but I habe also troubles with sound, WIFI and Bluetooth. Sound is very important to get the Blu-Ray with HDMI running. I also discuss this theme in the US Dell forum.
Can you tell me the Bluetooth and Wireless driver?
I will check now the hints from the Dell forum.
Regards from Germany
CCAA -
I am from Germany, too. So that everyone here can understand how to install the drivers I stay writing in English.
So, first of all the internal Wireless-Card is relatively easy to install. But be careful: Dell offers different Wirelessmodules. The one I am talking about is the DELL 1397 Wireless-Card. The chipset of this card is made by Broadcom so the Driver for the following Module will work:
Broadcom 802.11g-Networkadapter
Windows XP does not recognize this driver as compatible to this device so you have to force Windows to use this driver!
The Studio 15 I'm using has no bluetooth so I can't say what driver you can use to get it working but several Vista-drivers are also runnable with Windows XP.
My HDMI is already installed but I can't test it. -
Look; I'd just try installing XP and see what happens. XP has a pretty big variety of drivers pre-installed. As long as you have a backup computer to go to get more drivers, yous hould be good.
-
be aware if you do try to install xp you more than likely won't have sound or wireless. i spent 2 days searching and testing different drivers and had no luck. if anyone actually gets it to work please mention the link to the drivers you used. dell 1510 wireless card is almost impossible to get working on XP at least of of today so any help with sound/wireless would be great
even though since i've been "stuck" using vista, it's kinda growing on me since i've stripped it's bloatware and turned off many services

The tips from the Dell Forum were all without success
I'm thinking of replacing the Broadcom 1510 WLAN card by an Intel card.
I've seen them for around 25. Would be an alternative to search for hours and days und ruin my nerves. -
Everyone here is missing the point -- Dell Studio is not using revolutionary hardware.
The components found in a Dell Studio have all been around for a while (sans ATI 3xxx series). Dell will never post drivers for Windows XP simply because they NO longer support it (XP for this particular system).
I have ordered my Studio 15 and will be installing XP on it. Usually its a matter of identifying a chips info and looking for drivers based off same core chip. It may a little more then that but as someone who works from the inside that will be fine.
That being said Vista works. Many people find it grows on them. From a techie perspective however I prefer XP. Its mature, has relatively few bugs, and works well for moderate gamers.
Ultimately though there is no choice -- Today XP has a core feature set that is very comparable to Vista's set. However we are already seeing Vista only features (DirectX10 etc.). Its only a matter of time.
That also being said you need to throw everything into perspective. I chose a Dell Studio because it is:
1) New machine and new line (not mid/end of cycle machine)
2) Based off mature design (last edition of centrino prior to c2)
3) Stock configuration has enough CPU and GPU power to meet a laptops needs with realistic price tag -- not to mention style points.
New tech needs time to mature and that is why I think the Dell Studio is somewhat of a pinnacle of this laptop generation.

Can you upload all the drivers working on XP please ?
Thanks for your help -
Hey guys!
I found the original Dell XP drivers for the Studio 1535 on http://driver.zol.com.cn/list.php?keyword=dell+1535&channelid=&x=0&y=0 . Now all devices are working. Just download all files branded with WinXP. Let me know your results. My Studio 1535 is now working fine WITH SOUND!!! -
Thank you for info. Sound is really running under xp. Also with Bluetooth I had success.
So my remaining troubles are WLAN (new Intel card is already ordered)
and HDMI is still not running.
For the graphic card card I took the Radeon Omega driver pack.
I took a driver for the Radeon HD 2600 XT to get the full resolution of 1440x900.
Works fine except HDMI.
@m3d0r: What kind of graphic driver did you take? -
I modded the Original ATI Catalyst Driverpackage for Desktop cards with the driverheaven mobility modder. But be careful: The newest version that works with the mobility modder is Catalyst 8.6. Catalyst 8.7 can't be modded with the (current) mobility modder. With this modded driver the Device is correctly recognized as HD 3450. AMD / ATI locks the installation of mobility devices by default but the mobility modder removes this lock.
The Dell 1397 Wireless Card works with the following Driverpackage from HP:
http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsuppor...-60549-1&prodTypeId=15351&prodSeriesId=447687
Windows XP does not recognize this driver as compatible so you have to use a workaround: Run the Installer (sp39243.exe) and wait until it's finished. Now you find a new folder on your HDD under C:\SWsetup . Now go to the Device Manager, right click on the Wirelessdevice and install the driver manually. You have to force Windows XP explicitly to use this driver. To do so you have to select *.inf files in the folder C:\SWsetup\sp39243. In the upcoming list choose "Broadcom 802.11g Networkadapter" and hit next. The upcoming warningdialog can be nexted with "yes" and then...you have Wirelessaccess. Hope this will help!
-
Thanks, I found the mobility modder 1 hour ago and used it with catalyst 8.7.
It recognized the 3450 but it ended in a blue screen. I will become a long night.
My WLAN card is the half sized 1510, it will be replaced. -
The problem with the bluescreen i had, too. So I decided to use Catalyst 8.6 instead of 8.7...and this solved my problem. =)
-
Hey m3d0r, I need you help. Can you upload your drivers in some Server, for exemp 4shared or Rapidshare? I have a problem with downloads in chinesse servers. Thanks a lot
-
Hi!
I uploaded the drivers (I needed to install my Studio 15) to Rapidshare, so that everyone can download them faster.

-
Have you tried this driver: http://driver.zol.com.cn/down.php?softid=322865&subcatid=15&site=9b ?
-
Thanks very much, only I need you help one more time; I don't found the Dell wireless 370 bluetooth internal (2.0). Do you have this driver? Thanks Kame m3d0r
-
I suspect you noticed quite a speed increase without all the Vista overhead and resource hogs running? Have you run any Benchmarks yet?
Regards,
PepperHead -
Hi!
No I haven't run a benchmark yet but the speed in comparison to Vista is much better.
@ E_B_E: Here you can find the Bluetooth driver: http://rapidshare.de/files/40178608/P186113_Bluetooth370.EXE.html -
Dell 1510 / 1397 Wirelesscard
http://rapidshare.de/files/40173613/sp39243.exe.html
Thank you for the links. Does this driver work with 1510 or only with 1397?
JaniS -
Thanks,
PepperHead
P.S. You said you did notice a speed increase over Vista. Did you do yours as a dual boot or format and do a clean XP Pro install? -
Hi m3d0r,
I download all drivers that u suggest:
Audio, Intel Chipset, HDMI, Dell 1510 / 1397 Wirelesscard, ATI HD 3450,
Cardreader, Touchpad, Broadcom Gigabit Ethernet, IR Receiver & Bluetooth.
Thks a lot tommorow I suppose to get my laptop an d first thing i will flash vs WinXP and your Drivers.
If you can please upload some tutorial (stages what first what second etc.)
thx a lot ,
David -
Thanks a lot M3D0R. I was desperate, "driverless", and about to reinstall VISTA. You saved my day...
Still one request though :
- I did instal all the drivers you suggested and WIFI is still not working (wireless card is not recognised by the system - no wireless conection appears in the "network connection" folder, etc.)
- In "devices manager", the network controller appears with a yellow quote mark and of course, I can't update it.
- when running a drivers detector, it appears "Broadcom Corporation Wireless 1510 Wireless-N WLAN Mini-Card" is installed as well as "Broadcom Corporation NetLink BCM5784M Gigabit Ethernet PCIe".
Any tip to solve this out ? -
To install wifi look here: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showpost.php?p=3721820&postcount=38
To install the Dell 1510 just do the same steps and choose "Broadcom 802.11n Networkadapter".
Have you tried to delete the gigabit driver and install it again (i mean the whole software installed by running the installer)?
