    Updated (22/09/2007) - Tested Working

Installing Windows XP on Dell Inspiron 1520

Before you install XP, you must first configure a setting in BIOS else XP CD will not detect your hardisk

    In BIOS:
Onboard Devices -> Flash Cache Module -> Set Off
Onboard Devices -> SATA Operation -> Set ATA

Ok, you can now proceed with installing XP

I would like to know the answer to this as well.

What does disabling the SATA feature do anyways? Will it slow down my Dell in any way?

Technically read/write speeds will be faster, but realistically you probably won't notice much of a difference unless you are running benchmarks, or doing drive read/write intensive operations.

How do I check if the R153997 Mobile Chipset (06-26-2007) component is installed properly on my Win Xp? And what happens if I do not install the mobil chipset first?

I installed windows xp just now and I tried to install the mobile chipset driver first, but after what seemed like a successful installation, it said "unknown error occured, setup will not exit." I went through with installing the rest of the drivers anyway and everything seems to be working fine. I then tried to instal the mobile chipset driver again just for kicks and it seemed like it installed a lot more stuff (ie USB's), and completed successfully. Is everything okay with my system? How do I check?

    Cheers

A coworker of mine just received her 1520, and I'm helping her downgrade to XP from Vista. We followed these instructions, and everything is working except the integrated webcam.
I've tried using both the download from Dell's support page as well as the webcam CD that came with the laptop. In both cases, I'm told that this XP Pro operating system is not supported.

Does anyone have any ideas as to why the webcam XP download is not supporting XP Pro?

I noticed you install the driver for the nVidia 8600M... what does one do if you have an nVidia 8600GT video card, or doesn't it matter?

I've simply GOT to get rid of this Vista install, it's driving me nuts...

Has anyone ran in to the problems faced when accidentally pushing the media direct button? Well I followed these directions and installed Windows XP on my friends computer and she accidentally hit the Media Direct button instead of the Power button and she got an error saying Microsoft Bitlocker is not allowing Media Direct to access the Hard Disk. so she hit the exit option and since then every time she restarts the laptop she keeps getting the "Invalid Partition Table" error. so, now I am in the process of reinstalling Windows Vista to turn off the bit locker encryption and then reinstalling XP. Any suggestions?

Did you try hitting the media direct button again? I get an NTLDR missing message if i hit the media direct button and then hit my power button. Hitting the media direct button again fixes the problem..

I tried installing Media Direct during the boot and then installing Windows XP and reinstalled Media Direct but the Media Direct button comes up with an error saying that it cannot access the hard disk due to Bitlocker Encryption still. So now I reinstalled Vista and according to Dell and Microsoft website the Option to disable this is supposed to be under Control Panel -> Security and it supposed to be there. BUT I CAN'T FIND IT THERE! and now Dell all off a sudden won't help me figure this out as apparently a hour ago this was not a Advanced option but all of a sudden is. They want me to pay for support now as I guess this option is magically a advanced Option.

Isn't Bitlocker only available in Vista Ultimate and Vista Enterprise editions?
That's what it says in the Wikipedia.
If you have Vista Home Premium, that would explain why you don't have it in Control Panel -> Security.

Well if that's the case that would make sense but After booting the latptop with the media direct cd and installing windows xp and and then installing media direct again. But hitting Media direct button is saying that it can't access my hard disk because of the this bitlocker encryption tool

Acutally I just talked to dell. They said that the bitlocker tool is to work with a Micro Chip called TPM. Apprently the Inspiron 1520 does not come with such cip but they decided to add the tool to the registry. I told them that I had Media Direct 3 CD which came with a friends XP and the rep said if tried that it would most probably work. So, I am trying that now, he said there is no way to erase Bitlocker without editing the registry and I guess walking me through will cost me extra. So, I am trying to fix this the best I can.

After installing Windows XP on my Inspiron 1520 everything went fine, but now I have a verry annoying problem: my @-sign doesn't work.
All my other keys on my keyboard work.
I have already tried another keyboard layout, searched for other drivers...
I have also Fedora core 5 installed and there the @-sign works.
Does anyone know what the problem might be and how to fix it?
    Thx!

XP only allows to load drivers from a floppy drive using installation.... So you would neet the inf files for the Intel SATA drivers on your floppy and make XP Setup search for it explicitly....

But the problem here is most people would not be having a floppy drive for their laptops.... So you got two options only.... Either use nlite and slipstream the drivers or switch to ATA mode during the Xp Install and later load the AHCI Drivers and on the restart switch to AHCI in BIOS....

Ya know I gotta say... Now that I installed XP Pro on my 1520... Its really not all that its cracked up to be. A tweaked vista premium actually runs smoother than xp pro.

Im going back to vista... But now i gotta figure out how to switch it back to sata
