There seems to be a lot of threads about installing Windows XP on
this model. I will shortly need to take a course and the course outline
says that it requires Windows XP, there's been nothing said about Windows Vista?
Is it difficult to install Windows XP on this machine? Can you later then
change from Windows XP to Windows Vista? Would this be difficult to do - the pros and cons? Thanks for your suggestions!

I would wait, most programs that run on xp will work in vista as well. I would wait and give those programs a try first, as downgrade is not so easy sometimes. maybe talk to you teacher/prof and ask if Vista will work.
by the way it's called a Inspiron not an inspiration. -
It will most likely work on Vista. You must also have an XP installation disc and license key to install. Otherwise it is not difficult to do.
