    Hi,

I just bought an inspiron 1720 that comes with Vista.
I want to reinstall Windows XP Pro on it, as many of my games do not run on Vista.
However, I do not have a DELL windows XP disc.
Is it possible to install windows XP on inspiron 1720 using a standard (non-dell) windows XP Pro disc?

    Thanks!

yes, you'll need the XP drivers for the 1720 though(you can request a disk or download them from the dell website)

Thanks nobscot6, thats a very useful link.
Looks like it takes quite a bit of effort to get things to work.
I wished they officially support XP for 1720.

I just did that on my Vostro 1400 a couple days ago. Once you have slipstreamed the SATA ACHI driver onto the installation CD, it is very simple. I installed XP on a new hard drive. First, I use the Media Direct CD to boot and set up partitions. Then put in the Windows installation CD. After finishing installing Windows, you need to put the MD CD back to install the Media Direct software.
