I've had an impossible time trying to dump Vista and get XP going on my 1505. Suppose I were to buy an new hard drive, would that effectively give me a fresh slate with no issues with bloatware and Vista?

I tried. couldn't get it to boot from CD. Vista seems to have a deathgrip on my poor laptop.

Yes. You'll just need to install the drivers and media direct if you want to keep it.

Before that, did you try going into the Bios and changing the boot order: make optical drive first?

Buying a new hard drive is not needed. You should be able to format your current one and install XP on it.
I do not have Vista so I don't know for sure how to format it. But I know people do it and it is of course possible.
