Is it possible to Ghost an image of an Inspiron E1705 (that I plan on returning) and restore that image on a comprably configured E1505?

You can try to restore a Ghost image on any computer. The question is whether it will recognize any differences in the hardware...I've seen this work before, when you boot up the new machine Windows just goes through and detects the different hardware.

Consider this though...if there is a hardware difference, and you try to put the Ghost image on a new machine, you would likely have drivers for hardware devices that you don't even have...why would you want a system cluttered with drivers and or registry settings that don't apply to your new system? I'd recommend a fresh install..then create an image of the E1505. Unless you are trying to get around software licensing for the something that you have installed on the E1705 and want on the E1505...if so shame on you ;)

I could not have said it any better ^^^ I agree with all points. Trying to put on an image that was created with different hardware = not a great idea.

Good point on cluttered registry settings. And a big no on the software licensing issue. This is all legit. I was hoping to avoid the install/update/defrag and configuration time. Thanks for the quick reply and reality check.
