Hi, i ordered a 1420 and forgot to add bluetooth when configuring it.
I'm thinking of installing bluetooth myself, is it possible? will it void the warranty? and what type of bluettoth should i use?

    Thanks in advance.

I was told by a Dell rep that adding/removing Bluetooth is as simple as removing the "sim card" found in many cell phones. Simple as "slip in, slip out" is how it was described to me...not sure how accurate this is though.

It may be as simple as "slip in, slip out". However, if you don't have access to the spot where you are supposed to insert Bluetooth, it won't be that easy. You might have to open up the whole computer and that will surely void the warranty.

Supposedly, this location is directly beneath the battery slot, readily accessible. Again, I have not observed this, just been told over the phone by a Dell rep.

On the Vostro 1400 (nearly identical design), you can find steps for replacing the Bluetooth module in the owner's manual. Check the 1420 documentation for possible steps outlining the procedure, it may be user replacable like on the 1400.

It is so easy on the 1420.

You just got to flip over the notebook and remove the memory module cover and follow the install instructions.

By the way, i ordered the Bluetooth adaptor 355 and it works fine! It is not a sim card, it is that size with a connector on it. Have to install it on the middle panel at the back of the laptop.

I just install on my vostro 1400 (should be same was 1420).

Online it's 19+ship. Instead I ordered over the phone....replacement department and they sent me 1 for 11$+8 shipping. No instructions or drivers, just module in static bag.

Unscrew memory cover and there's and attachment peice near to IR. It will clip on to the metal clips there.

I found the instructions in manual a bit vague. There is an adapter held with 1 screw right in the very front of the memory bay - closest to you after you remove the cover to memory slots. I took this out then fitted the bluetooth module into it, then attached wire, and then screwed the adapter back where it belongs. Not hard, but not quite clear in manual. Now i just need to get some bluetooth stuff :)
