I wish this on no one.. but.. anyone else have experience with insurance paid laptops?
state farm has been wonderful so far. and the more specific you are with what your original system was with them the more they reimburse you.
but business property is treated differently then personal property. not just insurance wise..but tax wise.. so.. the time you had the system also comes into play..
..
keep a folder ..digital or otherwise with the following..
1.keep a copy of your invoice..
2. a journal of any upgrades..hardware especially.
3. a journal of all..I mean all software.. everyone counts!
4. have music? or other downloadeable content.. keep that logged too..
yes.. a backup is good.. neccesary..
but.. my 2 laptops where stolen.. then the ipod.. of which all the music was stored on both the laptops .. so everything bit the dust.. all I have is partial music listing and pics on a 4gb microsd card in my phone..
so.. without the listing of all you had.. they will prorate the amount they will allot to your claim..
if you tell them oh. It was just a dell inspirion 8600 they only give you funds based on the "common" configuration that dell produces minus depreciation.. so.. you furnish them your logs and original invoice (if avail).. and it will increase significantly..
also.. when replacment system arrives (mine getting shipped straight to insurance office for security ) keep copy of all invoices.. and give your insurance claim agent a copy.. payment should arrive within 10 days...
sidenote..you don't have o replace system right away..you have 2 years to do it.. so you can get the newest system avail.
lojack is great.. but get insured..

Nice poll/thread...My lappy is insured, along with most of the things I own. A few years ago my first desktop, I brought to the techie's at school ~ as they were going to do some work on it. I placed it on an unstable table, whereas it crashed to the floor...and the inside were basically *a mess*
They couldn't get it to work properly. So, I called my insurance company, and I was surprised that a replacement was covered....Though, I had to get an estimate/repair slip stating it was *not repairable/worth the investment*.
They sent me a check, and I got a new desktop with the most current trends...And, I do believe it pays off when needed...
So therein Insurance does have it's worthiness

I usually don't insure anything because I usually sell it before I break it. Though, you can't really stop someone from stealing it. I guess I should look into it as I plan to get some stuff longer.

You should, look into it! The cost is nominal

You know I was thinking about this lately and I have to thank you for your insights on the matter as I always worry about this being an issue. This is a huge issue for me as my well being as well as my wife's , my dog and future children rely on my computers running and being in my possession. When I get home I will work up a folder with this information and do the proper data redundancy as I feel bad enough that I havent done this already.
