I installed the 64bit version of windows 7 a few days ago and have had some graphics issues ever since.

The best I can describe it is that it makes my screen look like an over compressed JPG image, all blocky and broken up, until I refresh it in some way then its fine for a while.

I have the intel GM45 chipset. I started with the drivers Windows 7 found after (clean) install but switched back to the ones provided by Dell when the issue showed up. That didn't cure it though.

    anyone else getting this?

    OK I did too

    this is what I did

Install the vista 64 drivers in Compatibility mode
then try this full transparency tweak
    Link

It fixed mine for good, 4 days now and it has not happened once
it was happening all the time before

It is definitely a driver issue

the full transparency changes a registry value for Blur, Areo blur is causing the problem.

If you have more questions just post again.

Thanks for the reply, I tried what you suggested but I couldn't get the vista 64 drivers to install, even in compatability mode I got a dialog box saying the drivers weren't appropriate for my machine.

I've installed the tweek none the less and as yet (the past 5mins!) all seems OK, so that may have cured it! I'll report back if it comes back again...

    OK
but compatibility mode ( it works I have done it a lot this year)

    Right click on the exe
    choose compatibility on the tab
    check run as administrator
choose Vista SP1 ( I know It says Vista SP2 there but I think SP1 is universal)

Apply Change settings for all users

then click on exe and install it does work

heres a Pic of that driver I used R204951

report back if just that tweak fixed it.

    this is good for others

later when Dell pusts out a better driver the problem may be gone ( i hope)

I am having the exact same issue here. I tried to do the fix you mentioned, but I ran into a problem with installing the vista 64bit drivers.

I have a Dell Studio 1737 running Windows 7 Home Premium. I did a fresh install rather than upgrading my Vista home.

It lists two different drivers in the support for Vista 64 when I visit Dell and through my service tag:

    R198103 for GM45
    R204951 for 4500MHD

I have tried to install both through compatibility mode but after the unzipping of the files I get the error "The driver being installed is not validated for this computer. Please obtain the appropriate driver from the computer's manufacturer. Set up will exit."

The graphic glitches are really annoying, I find I have to rescale windows all the time to fix glitches with icons and bars....any help would be greatly appreciated.

You have to use compatibility on the file before using at all, I have done this on 2 1555's so far and it works 100%

(2 to 3 times on my own because I was trying different drivers)

its possible to force Intel drivers not from Dell too, but the Dell Vista driver is better then the Windows 7 Update.

So click on that file and do compatibility.

Come back and tell me if you have any other problems maybe I can upload my driver or something for you to try, but you will have to check compatibility on that one too.

really so few of us are here on the forum that know this trick I'm sure Dell and intel will fix this soon.

I just can't seem to force it to install.

I went in and deleted my C:\dell\drivers\R204951 folder.
I deleted the R204951.exe file I got from Dell Support.

I went and downloaded a fresh copy of R204951.exe from Dell. I right clicked on it chose properties->compatibility and set the run this program in compatibility mode for Vista Service Pack 1 and checked Run this program as an administrator. I also made sure it was changed for all users. I clicked ok, then ran it. It unzips fine and moves onto the next phase...when I get the same error I mentioned above.

    Am I doing something wrong?

Your operating system is 64 bit 7 right?

The file downloaded is Vista 64 bit right?

you also have to be logged on as administrator fo the computer as well.

Later I can try to upload the file I used on mega upload or rapid share.

Your operating system is 64 bit 7 right? Yes

The file downloaded is Vista 64 bit right? Yes

you also have to be logged on as administrator fo the computer as well. Yes

The driver number matches that as what you posted above, the same R204951 version. I even tried the one from intel, they all get the same error message. If you can upload your file, that would be much appreciated. I would really like this cleared up. Working with one program open it's not too terrible, but when multitasking it's really annoying.

    Thanks for all the advice,

This is the file I used

I set it for compatibility mode under Windows 7 and run as admin for all users but you may need to check it too

    http://www.megaupload.com/?d=F9K5M8W8

    its about 19mb

Thank you for the file, it was the one I had. I deleted mine and the unzipped destination folder and tried it anyway. I did set all the compatibility stuff before trying to install and I got the same message. Looks like I have to wait for Dell to get around to this.

Appreciate you taking the time to reply

On last thing I thought of I set user warnings to 0

type user in the search of the start globe
    choose User account control settings
slide the lever all the way to do nothing, do not notify nothing
you can always change this back

I have no idea if this matters but I hate the notifications "Do you want to do this?" YES I do LOL.

I wish I could pop over there and help you. Just can't
    Hope you figure it out.

I know if you do not use Areo mode you will not have the problem at all per what others have said but I would call Dell then it may be something wrong with the video card too. If we had the ATI card this is a Non problem. Funny huh?

I will give those last few ideas a try, if I can't get it to install I will turn off Aero and see what happens. Post back in a bit and let you know what's up.

Can't thank you enough for all the help :D

    Well, good news and bad.

Good news is running the windows 7 basic theme got rid of all the little video glitches. Bad news is I have to run windows 7 basic theme.

I will watch closely for an update from Dell or Intel, I hope they get around to it soon.

DOn't kill me but I have one more file to try

    http://www.megaupload.com/?d=2Q8X3B4W

Its a registery tweak I used but I thought it was the same thing as the transparency tweak, it may be a little different?

    If you want try it

download and then double click ( you must be the administrator)

    then try the Areo again

    see if it works?

It will not hurt anything I used it and I have no problems.

    Bill.

No luck, didn't take me long to get the video glitch. I been running Win7 basic since yesterday and haven't seen it at all. So, no Areo for me till a fix is issued.

    regards,
    J

Hey, guys, why not to download the freshest drivers from the Intel site but not from the Dell's? I did so for the Intel X3100 in my 1525.
