I have a couple of questions about Intel Turbo Memory 1GB. I know where to buy it cheap (amazon).
#1. Can I install it in my new Inspiron 1720?
#2. How would I go about installing it? (A link to detailed instructions would be nice)
#3. How much of a performance boost will I get with 4 GB of ram? (3.5 actually, I'm running Vista 32b). Other stats in signature.
Thanks,

1)no
2)It's not supported
3)even if you could no, If you have more then 2GB RAM you will see no performance improvement -
-
The improvement may not be significant, but you will definately notice it's working - meaning it does improve performance a bit. -
If it actually was supported, I'd be more then willing to pay $30 for something that would provide noticeable improvement. I want to squeeze every drop of speed out of my laptop... Anyone else sure it's not supported?
-
It looks like it's supported from the link.

It's supported man. I have one installed on my M1330, and I got it after confirming from the link up there.
FCM is intel turbo memory. -

Well I've never seen it done do, I don't know maybe they started supporting it with Santa Rosa
With 4GBs RAM extra HDD cache won't make a difference maby .11111% but, completly unnoticable. -
Call and confirm that it's in stock before you order.
I called few places which showed "instock" on their site, but when I actually called, most told me I had to wait a week until it's shipped. -
I'm not a big fan of bench marks, but you will definately notice it working when you are booting/rebooting/shutting off your system - I have quite crap of stuff running on my task bar, and after the installation, every program on my task bars like..... BAM! lol.
Anyways, I hope this helped somewhat.

Great job explaining things, ACHlLLES. Repped. I'll probably hold off on buying it for now, but I might try it sometime in the future. Thanks to all who responded.

I installed it onto my 1720 on Thursday night on my x64 Ultimate setup and can confirm it works flawlessly. Performance difference isn't noticable for booting Windows but it does load applicatitons like Outlook and Word quicker so overall I am pleased.
Just to add my spec is T7500, 2GB DDR Ram. To my knowledge it only works on the Santa Rosa platform, and I believe only the T7200+ runs on this platform.
Oh one final thing, I paid £16 for it on Amazon, don't know what it is in the US but I assume no more than $30. Gotta be worth a go !!!

For those that are interested, the best price for people on this side of the Atlantic seems to be eTech4sale.com:
http://www.etech4sale.com/INTEL_MEM...INTEL/NVCPEMWR001G110/partinfo-id-318868.html
After UPS Ground shipping to Colorado for me, it was $36.59.
I've bought from eTech before, and found them to be a simple, straightforward online merchant that does good business.
Cheers!
I'll post back after I install and test. I had been looking for one of them . . . thanks to the post originator!

Just went out of stock: $26.59 + $7.38 shipping = $33.97 shipped
Available from amazon through a different seller for $33.95 + $5.09 shipping = $39.04 -
Actually I just went there and there was one more. I ordered it.
I have the 1720, but with the T5450. From what I have read it should work. I will let you know in a few days.

EDITl:
Oops, didn't notice there was a second page on this thread. Shame on me...
So never mind this reply -
You represent yourself as rather experienced with this card and it's performance benefits... -

The only advantage you are garnering from using the Turbo Memory is basically hiding away your ReadyBoost. If you use SD card for ReadyBoost, then I don't see much point, and the SD card can be used elsewhere. Otherwise, if you constantly use your SD slot and have all your USB ports full, this could be a very expensive 1GB readyboost...

There is ALWAYS improvement -
here it's $24.44 + $6.95 ground shipping.

For $33 that was a nice boost! And it does not occupy the SD slot or a USB slot. I painlessly installed it into the back of my 1720 tonight. Boot time was reduced by around 20-25 seconds (I have a login screen so it is debatable the overall times). I tried several apps, loading and unloading as well as documents.
I cannot say that things move 2x as fast. But I see a very noticeable increase in performance when it comes to pulling up apps and documents. AND...in apps such as Quickbooks 2k7 pro, it is at least 2x faster, as well as MUCH less HD access.
