So with the announcement from Intel today about processor price cuts of up to 40%, when will we see this mirrored in the prices of Dell Notebooks and processor options?

It seems to be that since most manufacturers have supplies of CPUs bought at the old price, they'll want to get rid of these at the old price before they drop prices. It might be a few months before we see the cuts propagate to the consumer.

or buy a basic system and get a much cheaper high end CPU from third party. changing CPU is quite easy thanks to dell's design. with vostro, only a matter of four screws. a T7700 costs only 300ish while dell asked 500+.

Huh? Dell will price their machines and parts according to market conditions... If they can get away with keeping the price high they will... Regardless of what Intel does...

Difficulty is relative... I'm a computer professional so I could easily swap the CPU in any computer, not counting ones with soldered CPUs of course, but that doesn't mean everyone can. If I were to talk to my brother in law who is a mechanic I'm sure he'd think swapping out car parts are super easy, doesn't mean they are for me...

Dell can charge whatever they choose and people will buy accordingly and adjust the price through demand; simple economics. Those users who are technically inclined enough to save money over those prices do so; always have and always will.

Most likely scenario: Dell keeps all extra profit. :(

well of course any reducing in pricing parts would mean reduction in Computer Manufactures prices.... Dell is not a monopoly, so they cannot charge what they WANT. Eventually some company will lower prices (probably the one struggling in sales) and others will HAVE to follow.

Unless dell is MICROSOFT ... (monopoly) they can charge almost what they want for windows...

As or the XPS lines, I dont ever recall seeing prices lowered until the next model was introduced and production stoped as in the case of the M1210.

If anything they'd keep the prices high on the M1330's to drive down the demand, catch up with prior orders, and iron out the flaws in the unit for a series revision.

A series revision that would then benefit from the chip cuts, and encourage yet more sales.

It seems dell.com.au already reduced the price of the upgrade from base 1.66ghz to the 2.2 ghz processor. this upgrade is now only 250AUD and i think for extra 6 Ghz it is well worth it. also seems the 2ghz have been taken off. the 2.4 ghz upgrade is still the same.

The price would likely be the same, they will take out the lower-end processor -1.5Ghz - (after clearing the stock) from the options and adding the higher-end processor (probably a 2.6Ghz) to the configuration list... :)
