I just went to the plain basic dell.com and store.apple.com online configurations, and compared two models of laptop that I'm interested in:
Dell M1330:
160GB, 7200pm HD
2GB RAM
2.2 GHz CPU
802.11n wireless
Slim AC adapter
10/100 network (standard, not upgradeable)
13.3" LED display (standard)
128MB 8400M GS video (standard)
MacBook Pro:
the same major components as the M1330 listed above, except...
15.4" LED display (standard)
128MB 8600M GT video (standard)
10/100/1000 network (standard)
The real kicker? Both models came out to be exactly $2283.00!
Now, I know this is before any rebates or sales. Dell coupons can be nice. But, you can get a big discount going through a first-time ADC purchase with Apple.
For as much as people talk about Apples being overpriced... this is surprising! You get a larger screen (for better or worse; it's more expensive a component), much better video, and gigabit ethernet instead of regular ethernet. Both machines have a very slim form factor.
Is the MBP actually a better deal? I ask in the Dell forum, as I am looking for a Dell perspective. But, let's try and be objective. Forget OS X vs Vista for now, please. I am more interested in Linux anyway. Thanks.

omg! Me thinks a conspirasay be aboot! lol
nice find -
so you took the 1999.99 price and you added two gigs of ram and a faster harddrive?
i think the real difference here is that dell is 13.3 inch and in this day and world, a fingerprint reader and a smaller lighter size is an extra like 500 dollars -
yeah, I just added components to the M1330 and both models got a slim air / AC adapter. Fingerprint reader seems rather valueless to me.
Smaller / lighter? Well... about the same weight, after the M1330 gets a 6 cell battery. Maybe a small weight advantage for M1330. Smaller M1330: easier to carry in some bags; Bigger MBP: bigger screen! A 15.4" screen is nice.
So basically, the same price... gets you better video and ethernet in the MBP. It comes down to personal preference on the size and weight issue. The MBP is rather light for a 15" laptop. -
the same thing was posted on Dailytech.com under the new dell laptop headline. It really does come down to preference. The MBP does have an advantage with the video and ethernet. Design could go either way depending on who you ask and they both have their advantages but overall I would say the MBP is more impressive when it comes to design. The biggest question is size though is all else is equal, I did consider the MBP but ended up purchasing the m1330 just because I want something small! I almost went with the Sony 11.1 so the 15" Apple is just too large for me. On the other hand the MBP is more flexable since you can run OSX, Windows, and Linux??
If I wanted something I am going to just keep at home and on my desk I would have gone with the MBP. Got a m1330 coming but with the T7300 2ghz, 1gb ram (i will upgrade to 2gb myself), 120gb HD (I have a 160gb already I can swap in), nvidia 8400, etc. In the end with tax mine came to $1900 shipped -
dailytech.com must be stealing my mojo! haha.
